Today we’d like to introduce you to Shelby Rogowski.
Shelby, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I guess I have always been an artist. I took an early year-round interest in musicals when all of the other kids were playing with dolls and practicing sports. I loved the movie Grease and would put on full reproductions of it with my friends. I spent my summers at my grandparents home outside of Philadelphia, and every morning I would paint with my grandmother, taking in the aroma of her freshly brewed coffee. At seven years old, my dad bought me my first DSLR camera (which was a pretty funny gift for a child), and in that same year, my mom put me into voice lessons. I continued playing with my camera. I also continued my vocal studies of classical opera for over ten years.
By the time I was fifteen years old, I had signed a publishing and record deal with Island Def Jam and Universal Music Group as a singer and songwriter. The-Dream (Terius Nash) and Tricky Stewart acted as my mentors in the recording studio. I was with them for a couple of years. I loved every bit of it, but I sacrificed a normal upbringing. I was homeschooled and graduated at sixteen. Around the time of my graduation, I had developed my painting skills into portraits using charcoal and pencils. I would draw for hours in between vocal cuts at the studio. When I wasn’t recording, I was taking photos, learning photoshop, and managed to teach myself to code HTML/CSS (I had one of those myspace layout websites which I provided custom skins for all of my friends).
When my record deal ended, I moved from New York to Los Angeles. I was going to school for audio engineering. I managed to submit design work to two creative agencies which both picked me up… I did a ton of freelance for all kinds of clients big and small. I wore multiple hats as a creative director to a designer, photographer, and web developer. I am now the Chief Marketing Officer for Komplément Marketing Agency. I love working on projects a professional photographer (commercial and editorial). My artwork has just been picked up, and prints are to be sold online at an upscale Los Angeles boutique. As for music, I am still actively pursuing that as well. I have been songwriting and will be flying to Sweden this summer to record an E.P.
Has it been a smooth road?
Not at all. There have been times when I wanted to give up. Being expressive in a world that tends to encourage structure and normality is not an easy thing. I’ve been hungry, depressed, and frustrated. I somehow used all of those negative feelings and turned them into fuel to keep going. The highs and lows are all apart of the journey. They shape you into a better artist, a more knowledgeable business person, and ultimately a better self.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I split my time between songwriting, photography, and working at Komplément.
Komplément Marketing agency is a full-service creative agency, an extension of the business consulting agency. We specialize in brand identity, content creation (photography, video, web design, graphics, print, blogs, and copy), social media, data, and event campaigning/management.
I’m most proud of my team. Bringing together talent that works in sync and works efficiently is gold. Most creative agencies give you beautiful content- but they don’t have a business consulting arm with our kind of sales experience to run the numbers and estimate ROI.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Yes and no. It can be hard to get off the ground (the market is very competitive) and develop your network. It’s also very expensive. With that being said, I love living here and I think the quality of life is a very good one. I believe that if people are happy, they are typically more motivated to succeed.
