Meet Shelby Ranson of Shelby Ranson Hair in Long Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shelby Ranson.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I didn’t always know I was going to become a hairstylist. My true love has always been music. Taking music lessons off and on from elementary through college kept me grounded. It also took me on a wild ride. When punk hit LA, I was smitten. I had the opportunity to play in various bands in clubs in and around LA. I was surrounded by the most creative and beautiful people. The fashion, especially the hair, was incredible. During this time, my younger sister was making a pretty good living as a hairstylist. She was my inspiration for getting into the industry.

Cosmetology School was a blast! My first job as a hairstylist was in Belmont Shore. It was great but I wanted to make a career of it so I began working at Allen Edwards Salon in Long Beach. They had a stellar assistant program where we not only learned how to do great hair but got an education in hospitality as well. We did hair shows, photo shoots and constant educational classes. It was very well rounded. I spent the first ten years of my career there splitting my time between the Long Beach, Newport Beach, Beverly Hills and Encino Salons.

I took a five-year hiatus from the industry when my husband and I started a family. When I returned to work I had to start over as far as building a clientele. I have been working part time as an independent contractor for the past twelve years.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I love a good challenge! That is probably why I am still in the Industry. I would have to say for me personally, as a small business owner, mastering online marketing is key. There is a constant learning curve that exists while utilizing social media marketing and you have to stay ahead of that curve. As my business coach says “Gone are the days where you can just show up and do great hair!” I’m willing to do whatever it takes to stay in this super fun, and creative field, I can’t imagine anything more fulfilling.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Shelby Ranson Hair – what should we know?
I’m an independent stylist in a boutique salon. I am known for being professional and friendly and being able to deliver any color request within reason. Color is my passion. I am extremely driven as far as learning new things, therefore I am current in the latest trends as well as the staples in style.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
That would have to be tenacity.
