Meet Shawna Charles of Charles Communication Group

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shawna Charles.

Shawna, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I worked for corporate Direct TV for 15 years and then our company was acquired by AT&T. From there, I decided to take a year off to gather myself. I went to therapy, did some self-assessments and decided what my next journey was going to be. I thought a lot about what I enjoy doing and wanted to do something that didn’t feel like work. That’s when I decided to open my own communications company because it brought all of my skills together.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My journey has not been a smooth ride. One of my biggest challenges when I first started my communications agency was finding clients and communicating the value that I can bring to their business. The second challenge was figuring out my niche in the comms space and being able to define that. Most people think public relations, media relations and communications are only for entertainment and they don’t think of all of the other industries that could utilize communications services. The path to entrepreneurship is not always an easy road because you have to constantly hone in on your skills. It was a process for me because I had to define my signature services and figure out how I wanted to show up for my target audience.
