Meet Shaunna Hatcher of Zislis Group

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shaunna Hatcher.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I joined the team in 2006 at Shade Hotel in Manhattan Beach. I was hired in the events department and worked my way up the ranks from Food & Beverage Director to General Manager to Senior Vice President of Operations for Zislis Group which we created in 2011. I am a fantastic example of our company’s philosophy to always promote from within and to nurture and grow our team so that we can provide both experience and opportunities to those that choose to join the Zislis Group family of restaurants and hotels. I truly love my team and feel appreciation everyday for the people that I work with- we are inspirational people who strive everyday to be the best!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
No road worth walking is always smooth.

Our struggles have come primarily from our desire to keep our business practices – and resulting guest experiences- personal and authentic. We absolutely recognize and implement the importance of systems with regards to safety, but we intentionally keep our guest service interactions, sales & marketing practices and conflict resolution methods lightly structured so that we can always be facilitating creativity, ingenuity and innovation with our team and our company. We want to wow our guests and that requires the freedom to think and act outside of the box.

Please tell us about Zislis Group.
Zislis Group is a talented group of inspirational people who strive every day to be the best in the industry by providing unparalleled food, drink, accommodations, atmospheres and above all else, hospitality, to our guests. Inspirational leadership motivates team members to make each and every guest feel special and welcomed by creating warm connections and memorable experiences. If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Personally, I would have begun studying leadership sooner.

Perhaps there are those out there that are born natural leaders and don’t need to read or study anything; that’s not me. I devour leadership books, searching for the pieces that apply to myself, my team and the company as a whole. There are so many incredible people out there to learn from- from Napoleon Hill to Steve Chandler to Deepak Chopra and Danny Meyers- so much incredible information to learn and teach others. The investment in your team is the number one priority, period. And the best way I have figured out how to inspire and lead others to greatness is being a living, loving, learning example myself.
