Today we’d like to introduce you to Sharon Siman-Tov.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
To this day, I wonder how I came to collect antique and vintage jewelry for a living. 23carat is quite literally, the most ideal intersection of my passions: art, fashion, culture, history, geology, and sustainability.
I have always had an affinity for jewelry, and had previously attempted to learn metalsmithing. I inquired about a jewelry design school in San Miguel de Allende, and when I learned it was strictly silversmithing, my gold-obsessed self was disappointed.
Then my grandfather passed away, and he left behind three signet rings that I had always been drawn towards. I felt the need to acquire my own, and upon every new purchase of a wearable historical work of art, I felt a high. I would fantasize about where the rings came from and what lives they had lived before.
After I had amassed too many rings for my ten fingers, and some high credit card bills, I had the brilliant idea to create an Etsy. Fast forward two years, and here I am with a large collection of vintage and antique jewelry, a supportive community and the loveliest customers!
I am in awe everyday that this business came into my life, and am grateful.
Has it been a smooth road?
Like any business, there are challenges that come along with all the good things. With every obstacle, I have had to adjust the way I do things and learn from each experience.
One caveat is the idea that antique and vintage jewelry comes from a previous owner, and with age comes to wear. To me, the imperfection adds to the overall appeal and charm of old jewelry–this can sometimes cause a discrepancy for those expecting perfection. Sometimes you incur losses that you don’t anticipate and you have to roll with it!
So, as you know, we’re impressed with 23carat – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
23carat is an exclusive collection of fine antique and vintage jewelry, consisting of mostly rings and bands. Our collection ranges from the 1800s to contemporary jewelry, featuring a wide selection of one of a kind pieces.
We are known for our gypsy-set starburst rings, which was a Georgian-Victorian-Edwardian-Art Deco trend. These pieces borrowed Italian architecture and eastern astrology, and were gifted as love tokens!
Additionally, 23carat offers an alternative and affordable array of love tokens–many of these heirlooms are purchased as engagement and wedding rings.
We also proudly repurpose and extend the lifespan of these beautiful pieces by finding them new homes, without the environmental implications of modern day manufactured jewelry. Old cut diamonds still have the same shine and brilliance, with a nuanced aesthetic!
Last and not least, customer service is an integral part of 23carat, and I place an emphasis on communication and service for my customers.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Los Angeles is also an intersection of my favorite things: art, culture, history (the art deco buildings are the apple of my eye), landscape, and fashion. I love the movement of this city, although sometimes I live at the pace of an 80-year-old. In an ideal world, LA would have less traffic (and pollution), less people, and less development. But yet, I’m grateful that I can take a quick run in the mountains, then drive to the beach for lunch with friends.
