Today we’d like to introduce you to Shant Sahakian.
Shant, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was born in Los Angeles and I am a lifelong resident of Glendale. I was attracted to the arts and computers from a young age and I started learning the basics of design and coding while I was a student at Columbus Elementary School. By the time I reached Toll Middle School, I was able to build my own websites and it became a way for me to bring my creative and technical interests together. One of my middle school classmates asked if I can build a website for his family’s business and they became my first official client. That was the moment my business was born and my hobby became a career.
Over the years, my industry, business, and I grew up together in many ways. The tech industry rapidly evolved and created new opportunities with mobile apps, social media, and digital platforms. The business expanded to serve clients with a wide range of marketing, design, and technology services. I had the opportunity to work with many diverse businesses and non-profit organizations. During this time, I also discovered my passion for public service and volunteer work became a big part of my life.
In April 2017, I was elected to the Glendale Unified School District Board of Education. I am proud to be the first Millennial and youngest School Board Member elected in Glendale history. I have the honor of serving our next generation of students and ensuring that our schools are providing a 21st century public education that prepares all of our students for success.
Has it been a smooth road?
As a young entrepreneur, I was going to school, juggling many responsibilities, and wearing multiple hats at any given time so you have to have a strong work ethic and manage your time wisely. The tech industry is constantly changing so you are always doing your homework and learning to stay ahead of the curve and be ready for the next big thing. You learn to become comfortable with the idea that what you learn today may change by tomorrow. That has been a valuable lesson that I bring with me as a School Board Member in looking forward and thinking about how we can best prepare our students for their future.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Sedna Solutions story. Tell us more about the business.
Sedna Solutions is a full-service digital agency providing marketing, design, and technology services for businesses and non-profit organizations. The digital agency was founded in Glendale, California and has been serving clients since 1999. Sedna brings together a synergy of strategic thinking, creative excellence, and tech savvy that helps organizations tell their story, grow their audience, and reach their ultimate potential.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
In the past decade, we went from designing websites for desktop screens with a mouse and keyboard to building apps for smartphones and mobile devices with touch screens that are with us 24 hours a day. In the next decade, technology will continue to have a major impact on how we do business, communicate, travel, and spend our time every day. Just as they have in the past, each wave of innovation and change will present new challenges and opportunities. As a business owner, you have to stay on the cutting edge and keep pace with the change so you can meet your clients’ evolving needs.
As an elected official serving in public education, you have to make sure your students are going to be ready for the future that is going to meet them. I’m proud that our Glendale Unified School District just recently voted to transform one of our elementary schools into the Cerritos Computer Science Magnet School for example. By the year 2020, we will have an estimated 1 million computer science jobs unfilled because we lack graduates proficient in coding. Our K-6 students will now have computer science and coding education integrated into their daily curriculum which will help train the industry’s future workforce and it will help expand our students’ learning opportunities.
