Today we’d like to introduce you to Shannon Sommers.
Shannon, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today. Photography was a longtime hobby of mine and is now my third career. My first career being a medical doctor. I practiced Emergency Medicine for 11 years until February 2016 when a herniated lumbar disc changed my life. I had two back-to-back (no pun intended) surgeries and was at one point completely paralyzed from the waist down.
I was in intense pain and barely mobile in the early half of 2016. My boys were 1 and 3 years old at the time and I could no longer chase after them, get down on the floor to play, pick them up or even hold them. It was devastating. When I was strong enough I put a zoom lens from my wildlife photography days on my old camera and used it to track the boys running around our yard. They loved looking at their photos. It was fun and helped me reconnect with my kids but I still envisioned myself as a physician and anticipated returning to practicing Emergency Medicine in a few months.
However, my recovery did not go as I’d hoped and in January 2017 I was not physically working in an ER but I was writing about it. My second career consulting and writing on “The Night Shift”, an NBC medical drama about the doctors and nurses working the night shift in a fictional San Antonio based emergency room.
It was a fantastic experience and being on set furthered my interest and skill in photography. Friends started asking me to take their family portraits, maternity photos and the like. And thus Ev + Ro Photography was born.
Has it been a smooth road? It has not been the smoothest road. After I made the decision to really follow my passion and start my own photography business there were several struggles. One was the business side of things, in particular, my website. I had just landed a huge project with 80+ clients and needed to revamp my website and set up an ecommerce platform. I chose to focus on the creative side of the business and hired someone to create the website. Sadly, I got scammed. The person I hired did not perform any of the tasks in our agreement. Told me it was more complicated than anticipated and asked for twice as much money to complete the project. And wanted to be paid under the table from the organization this person worked for. I was over budget and really pissed off at this person and ended up doing it all myself.
We’d love to hear more about your business. I own and operate my own photography business, Ev + Ro Photography. It’s named after my children, Everett and Rowan. While I specialize in photographing young children and families I enjoy all types of photography from products to newborns but what I am really known for is stunning family candid’s and portraits at sunset on our beautiful SoCal beaches. What makes me different? I ask clients what they want to FEEL when they look at their photographs. Is it the power of a spontaneous candid or the serenity of a perfectly posed portrait? Connecting with a photograph on an emotional level versus a visual one is what I am all about.
Is our city a good place to do what you do? Absolutely. LA is an amazing city for photographers and I am lucky to call it home. I have travelled the world and have yet to find a place with the photographic opportunities that Southern California offers.
