Meet Shaleena Tareen of Playsource in Woodland Hills

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shaleena Tareen.

Shaleena, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I am a business graduate, however, my interest in Early Childhood Education was sparked by the birth of my daughter. I wanted to make sure that I, her first teacher understood her needs and provided her with the best care possible. I have since been in the field of education. I started my career teaching preschool in 1998 and after 4 years ventured into opening up my own childcare business known as “The Montessori Way”. After the birth of my second child, I decided to devote my time to raising him and closed my business to be a stay at home mom. After he turned two, I stepped into the workplace again and found myself accepting a position as a Preschool Director at a prestigious private school called Woodland Hills Private School. Here I worked for 8 years developing and nurturing a developmental program where children learned through play. Simultaneously, I began teaching a mommy and me class known as “Playology”, in my community at Bell Canyon, where I live.

June of 2016 was a time of change. Playsource, a well known indoor play area in the community was on sale. My husband knew of my dream of making Playology into a household name and informed me of this opportunity. We purchased Playsource without a second thought.

Has it been a smooth road?
As with all businesses, there have been bumps along the way. Taking over an existing business means taking over all the positives and the negatives. The challenge is recognizing and converting the negatives into positives. Playsource needed TLC in the form of some renovations, which meant many, many late nights since we could not begin work till after closing time. This on some days was after 8 pm.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Playsource is 4400 square feet of indoor play space. Children have a variety of play experiences when they are here. Playsource offers a bounce house, tubes and slides, foosball and air hockey, a lifelike playhouse and so much more.

We specialize in open play during the week where parents bring their children to play, socialize and burn off energy. Our open play admission is an all-day pass, so families can play, leave and come back to play if they please. Parents love to be able to work on their laptops (we have free wifi) in our dining area while being able to watch their children play.

We are extremely popular for birthday parties, baby showers and field trips that are hosted as private events on Friday evenings and all day Saturday and Sunday. During these events, Playsource gets transformed into many themes that make these events extremely special. Party hosts have the flexibility to decorate, cater and add entertainment to their parties with the help of our experienced staff members.

What sets us apart? Our ever-changing play environment. We love giving children new play experiences. We continuously add new toys and offer play themes that we change monthly. Our play house is a vets office one month and an ice cream parlor the next. Our small world play tables change from the arctic to outer space. This encourages children to use their imagination and increase creativity.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
There is a lot of scope and need in our city for this kind of business. As a parent I was always looking for ways to entertain my children as they were growing up. For people looking into this kind of business, look for a place that can offer ample parking, since that can be a challenge for parents.
