Meet Shalae Madison of S MAD Productions in Los Angeles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shalae Madison.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Shalae. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’m originally from the DMV (PG county Maryland, NOT BALTIMORE.) I moved to LA August 2018 two months before my 30th birthday. I’ve wanted to live in LA to write and make films since I was in the 7th grade. Photography came much later in life. My early 20s. It all goes hand in hand for me. I grew up in an environment that was publically “good”, but privately bad. Violence, lots of violence in my personal life and that IS my truth. Watching movies all day and night if I wasn’t at school or church or sleeping; was an escape for me as well as continued therapy for me. I saw, heard and experienced things NO one child or adult should have to. Honestly; films of all kinds were what made me feel strong and safe and like I could do ANYTHING. Hence why I am now in LA; writing and confident that very soon people will see MY films and feel what I felt; super powerful in the midst of trauma.

Has it been a smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road. I’ve had some highs and some lows. Actually; if I’m gonna be my most authentic self (as in true artist should always be) I’m at a low point right now! If I’m being honest and keeping it 100, I’m actually homeless right now. I slept on a train platform a few nights ago until it was time to clock in at work and no one knew. I don’t want to make a habit of glorifying my struggles but I also don’t want to pretend that life is always 100%going my way. Right now I feel like I could make the perfect peanut butter and jelly sandwich but I’m missing a key ingredient. I’ve got a job, I’ve got the tenacity, right now I’m missing the stability. Hopefully, that will be changed by the time this article is shared. I want people to know that being human and having lows is not something to try to mask with rolling with the best crew or wearing the best clothes; it’s about having the best attitude of gratitude EVERY SINGLE DAY. I push through EVERY SINGLE DAY.

Tell us more about your work.
As stated earlier I’m a writer. Screenwriter; I’ve got quite a few scripts under my “belt” (unsold, not yet produced) and I’m currently working on a new pilot. I’m so excited about it! Also, I’m a photographer; I guess you could say that’s what pays the bills. I take pictures and create memories for others. I shoot clubs, private events, personal photoshoots, weddings, you name it; I can capture it ALL. I’m most proud of my work bc it was self-taught. No school, not even YouTube university. I strongly believe God blessed me with a particular set of skills like Liam Neeson’s character in the movie, Taken; except I’m good with a Camera. Shooting and writing is my contribution to the world.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
More and more people are realizing that they can create without the endorsement of big names and studios. A lot of my peers are figuring out that we can win and we can do it by using what we already have. Those resources we can come across at any moment and the realization is now turning into ACTUALIZATION.
