Today we’d like to introduce you to Shafic Tayara.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My journey started with a pencil and paper, drawing up imaginations as a kid led to creating my own destiny. In high school, friends asked if I could shape their hairline because they knew I had a steady hand from drawing and would do so in my garage. As I grew older, I developed a passion for cutting hair because I saw the positivity in turning nothing into something and the happiness and confidence it brought people. In 2009 I attended Aveda Institute, a cosmetology school in Los angles and created the concept ‘get Faded Blown and Nailed (get FBN) a perspective brand that actually means get your hair faded, hair blown and nails done (look good) to help break stereotypes and inspire others to keep going no matter what the circumstance appears to be. This was easy for me to keep doing because it has a purpose deeper than just cutting hair and is a true lifestyle of an entrepreneur. Today I have ‘get FBN the salon’ and started designing merchandise that represents life’s experiences.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It’s never a smooth road when doing something new to the world. Growing Muslim American I had to deal with questioning the road I chose to oppose going to school and taking the safe way. I remember in 2008 moving away to South Carolina to live with my uncle and work at his restaurant just to get away from the LA peer pressure and to completely clear my mind from not only bad distractions but good ones as well because just because they were good didn’t mean it was what my purpose was. After spending a year there, I moved back and that’s when I enrolled in beauty school.
Get FBN – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Get Faded Blown and Nailed is all about turning negatives into positives. Our logo represents hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil all in 1. Also symbolic to blocking out negative energy. As a barber, I realized true happiness is found by bringing it out in others. That’s the culture the shop brings. What I’m most proud of as a company is the Time put in. In 2020 we will be celebrating a decade of existence which to me gains the most value because of the relationships built and the experiences have been priceless. In the future, the brand will expand to ‘get FBN THE VIBE’ and hookah lounge attracting a positive social house for men and women inspired by the salon. Get FBN the motto ‘Be You • Do You • Stay true’.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
To me, success is finding your purpose, that is the ultimate peace of mind.
