Meet Shade’ Elliott of Vintage Apparel

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shade’ Elliott.

So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I am a self-taught fashion designer, seamstress, and fashion stylist. I am 23 years old, from Virginia. I began to watch YouTube sewing tutorials and would just do DIYs. I love to thrift and would take thrifted items and create my own garments or bags, etc. My grandma is also a seamstress and has been ever since she was about my age or younger. I would also get tips and pointers from her as well that were and are still very helpful.

Has it been a smooth road?
“Nothing worth having comes easy.” No, it hasn’t been a smooth road but I am grateful for everything good or bad that I have came across during my journey of being a designer/stylist. There are always going to be obstacles but the outcome from hardwork and dedication will make up for it.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
My brand is “Vintage Apparel” which I created a few years ago (2017) right after I left from college. I began Vintage Apparel as a thrift/reselling business while in college. I transitioned it into a clothing brand where I mainly up-cycle clothing and reconstruct thrifted or recycled clothing into a new piece of clothing, or a handbag, etc. I also created a kids line which is Vintage Apparel Kids where I will release baby clothing, onesies, bibs, etc. along with children’s clothing (sweatsuits, tees, etc.). So far, I am mostly proud of having my brand on the local news station last year for the kid’s fashion show and my most recent fashion show that I fully curated and creative directed in downtown Richmond, Virginia. I believe what sets me apart from others is that I am always myself very different and have a lot of faith and confidence in myself and my work.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Yes! I would recommend them starting wherever they are. No matter where you are located, I believe if you put the hard work behind it and are true to your craft then you can make it anywhere.
