Today we’d like to introduce you to Shaan Singh.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Shaan. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’ve always had a love for music and my world opened up during my early teenage years touring in punk rock/pop-punk bands with my closest friends.
Having experience in playing guitar, drums and writing songs, I decided to move more towards music production and audio engineering. I attended S.A.E Institute in Atlanta Georgia (2009). That was the beginning of my newly inspired passion for the art of recording.
After I graduated from S.A.E, I landed an internship at the legendary ZAC Recording Studios. From making strong pots of coffee, food runs for clients and handling other studio errands, I got an opportunity to become an assistant engineer. Which lead to a staff engineer position at ZAC for about four years. The owner of the studio Jim Zumpano gave me a shot and luckily, I didn’t blow the opportunity. I learned a lot about engineering and general life from Jim Z and my friends Sam Thomas and Tony Terrebone.
Sam Introduced me to my manager Monica Tannian at Milk Money Consulting. Monica and I have been working together since 2015. She’s helped me grow into a better person and an engineer throughout the years. We’re family and still work together.
I started working with Young Thug in early 2017 and we had a solid run for a few months. We worked well together and our workflow clicked pretty quickly. Eventually, I needed a change of scenery and always wanted to live in California. So I saved up for a few months, packed my bags and moved to Los Angeles without having a solid gig lined up.
The universe works in strange ways and Young Thug was randomly on one of my flights to LA. We connected at the gate and went straight to the studio. I’m extremely thankful for all the opportunities that have come from working with him. We’ve worked on several projects together, toured the US and Europe a few times and have built a great friendship together.
Moving to Los Angeles really changed my life and my wildest dreams started becoming a reality. From working with some of my idols like Travis Barker and John Feldman to working at Chalice Recording Studios and winning a Grammy for “This Is America” – Childish Gambino.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The music industry has a lot of ups and downs. I’m really passionate about music and I love being a part of the creative process.
Several months of sleepless nights in the studio can take a toll on you and I’ve had to realize that there’s a point where you had to take a step back and find a way of balancing work and life together. I want to make music forever and want to enjoy the ride.
Social Sound Productions – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I feel like working in the music industry is a lot like working in the service industry. Whether your job title is an engineer or producer, we’re here to help artists fulfill their vision in the smoothest way possible. It’s an amazing feeling to start with a blank canvas and hear these amazing records blasting out of the speakers. I’ll get goosebumps from time to time. And I don’t take anything for granted.
I’ve been working on more music production recently and have been trying to set aside some time to be more creative and work on my production style and sound. I’m excited to see what the future holds.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Probably taking my mom to the Grammys. She was so stoked and proud of me. She’s been super supportive of my path in the music industry and has been there for me through tough times.
I flew her out to LA, took her shopping for a dress, and we both got haircuts before the ceremony. We celebrated at the after parties together and had a blast that week! Love you Mom!
