Meet Sha Turrado, Model and Dancer in Echo Park

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sha Turrado.

Sha, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I danced for the first time when I was 3 years old in Paris. I was not very good because even though I was trying very hard, I was very tall at the time and I was hyperactive as a kid ( I’m still but I learned to use that now as a tool!) so, I was not focused, trying to escape from ballet classes…

When I was 5, I started contemporary classes and I hated that. My teacher asked me to “Become a sheet of paper”, I was not convinced about that skill, then for the big show at the end of the year, I was supposed to be the elephant, not happy with that so I stopped Contemporary, still doing ballet. At 8, I was doing my first year at Paris Opera, but I’ve been raised with Nirvana, Aerosmith and another musical culture and when I tried to pass my exams on some Metal songs I’ve been fired! Well, another fail story!

I started other sports, like King Fu, capoeira and Gymnastics, I was pretty good but I needed to dance, I found one night a Brazilian gig in the streets and I asked them to teach me, I enjoyed that!

Then, I knew that I wanted to mix different technics to do my own dance.

At 16, I lived in Ireland in a lovely host family, in Gorey and in school, I obviously took Irish dance classes, I was crazy about that! But once back in Paris, I was not able to continue, so I went back to ballet, and I learned on my own Chachacha, Tango and other Latin dancing.

I had the same ballet teacher than I had younger and we were not in a very good relationship, she was hiding me on stage, trying to make me disappear.

One day, I’m in an open space called 104 in Paris and I met a dancer from Dance with the stars France, she made me fall in love with contemporary, finally!

After two years dancing with her, I started to create my own style, dancing on the songs I like. I’m a chemist in life and at university, we had this talent show, I danced on Mama by My Chemical Romance, the year after on some Rammstein song named “Sonne” And there, I went!

Everybody was knowing me for being the weird one with no bones, dancing on wild songs! Paris may be big but you only need to be at the good spot to know everybody, so I met a group of people named, “Free Spirit”. I danced with somebody tattoos for a photoshoot, as a Deadly Dancer, I liked it!

Two years ago, they launched a big production show with 80 dancers on stage and I got one of the main roles! I was very happy with that and I recognized myself in that creature, I met my best friend there, she’s dancing, too. Time went by and the artistic director put too many people on that show and I felt like I had no words to say and nothing to had to this, I felt uncomfortable not to create my own character at all.

I took a break and it was last summer, I succeed at my exams so I could go enjoy the festivals! I am working on the Download Paris, Friday and I met this guy, an alien, big guy wearing black glasses, with long black dreadlocks, very noisy and I knew we had to share a lot. The guy was playing for Skinny Puppy, we had a lot of fun, and we finally saw each other again in Amsterdam. And he asked me if I wanted to visit him in Los Angeles California: The dream of my young life! IT WAS A YES!

But, because there is always a but, I had no job and I spent all my money on festivals and vacations… end of June, I’m heading home back to Paris and in 3 hours I had a new job! I worked in a Freakshow, just to go there, I flew in a shitty plane, but I was happy and starting to live my dream!

I went back to Paris and I never felt this depressed before. My head and heart were in Los Angeles… so, I worked like 3 french people and I booked a new trip in December! I met a lot of amazing people and I’m thanking Michael Jerome Moore, a drummer, that in 20 minutes asked me to dance in his video movie, a movie starring me! I was not believing that!

I came back in February and we did that, with an amazing bodypainting, my new life was beginning!
I’m now waiting to see the movie and I’m now in Paris to work, but I already booked my next trip. I’ll be back running around Silver Lake reservoir May 8th, for another month!

I think I said everything… oh, I started aerial silk, but I’m a very beginner so don’t ask me to show you now!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I said everything just before! It was the highway to hell in the middle of paradise!

Please tell us about Sha Turrado.
I’m doing a lot of different things, I would name that contemporary, but not really! And, I’m doing some bodypainting gigs!

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Arriving in front of my very classical teachers and rocking the stage on Poison by Alice Cooper (the “Being fired part was not as cool).
