Today we’d like to introduce you to Sethward.
Sethward, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Being one of six kids raised in a small Texas town I learned how to get attention in alternative ways. My mother, being the most creative person in the world, encouraged us to not take life too seriously and emphasized the importance of making others smile. Through the years my mother’s costume closet turned into a costume room where creativity to become anything you want prospered. I moved to LA in 2007 to pursue a degree in television production where friends and I made sketches and short films in which absurdity was the main ingredient.
I started performing live characters around LA and now all over the nation at music festivals and events. I now run a monthly gathering, Show & Tell Screening Spectacular, in which a community of filmmakers and their friends converge in my backyard and show video projects we’re working on before uploading them to the web. It’s a wonderful place to connect with other comedians and catch up on what’s happening in the local video comedy world.
Has it been a smooth road?
I’ve done hundreds of shows where my style of comedy is not met with applause and accolades, I was just booed offstage of a 3k person theatre while I was inside a children’s sleeping bag pretending to be a fat caterpillar becoming a beautiful butterfly. Show & Tell has been met with similar problems with neighbors not approving our meetups and issuing multiple complains to the City. So many people don’t see the same way but adversity makes for such richer comedy!
We’d love to hear more about your business.
People describe my style as absurdist physical comedy, hyper-committed, willing to sacrifice his body and people’s sense of security to land a joke of immensely silly proportions. My style of comedy specializes in taking ridiculous ideas to deranged and hilarious places, but digging in so good it somehow becomes beautiful at the same time.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Certainly! It’s the city of dreams and a million opportunities. It’s hard to find your voice among thousands of fighting comedians but once you find your community it’s exponentially quicker!
I hope to grow our Show & Tell community and produce more content eventually creating a TV show and other collaborative movies. I dream of running a production company that creates programming that allows me to fully dive into my style and bring my dear friends with me along the way.
