Meet Sebastian Escamilla

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sebastian Escamilla.

So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My name is Sebastian Escamilla and I’m a Latino American actor / professional side hustler from Dallas, Texas. In 2015, I graduated from the University of Texas, packed up my life, and used all my college graduation money to move somewhere far away, somewhere I had always dreamed of living – Los Angeles, CA.  I couldn’t wait to take my shot amongst the other thousands of actors with the same dream I’d been dreaming of my entire life. Knowing almost no one and having zero family nearby, it was the most frightening thing I had ever done, but my passion has always been entertainment and I needed to be here.

Acting has always been number one, but it’s taken a lot of self-exploration and discovery to be sure of that for fear of rejection, ridicule, naysayers, and the fact that acting can be one of the most unstable careers to pursue. For anyone that wants to pursue a career in entertainment, you have to love it. You have to love the uncertainty, spontaneity, and most importantly you need to love people. You have to be ok with failure and success, and I can say a lot of my successes have been due to friends I’ve met along the way. It’s a who’s who business and networking is key. I love meeting others with similar dreams, the ones who can’t see limits, and believe that anything is possible. If there’s one thing I know 100% at this point in my life is that what consumes your mind will manifest in reality at some point or another.

Has it been a smooth road?
Year one was hard. It was the first Thanksgiving and Christmas I didn’t spend with the people I love. I can’t even begin to explain how lonely I was, but I learned very quickly that regardless of your feelings the world will carry on with or without you. I’ve learned you need to be ready for whatever opportunities arise and always say yes, at least in the beginning. When pursuing your dreams, you have to make sacrifices and it’s important to strengthen your character and remember everything is mind over matter. You have to be able to adapt and adapt quickly because the universe is always testing you. It’s how you react that will make or break you. I can say with confidence that LA makes you tough.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
Acting is a tough profession. You need stamina and until I can get paid to do it full-time my business is investing in myself. As an actor, you have to understand that YOU are the business so you must invest your time and money into you. Every side hustle that brings in the bacon should fund your dream. I currently manage my own Airbnb business, drive for Lyft, work part-time at a salon, and am developing a clothing line, another passion of mine.

Next month I begin filming for a new web series titled I Friggin Love You created by my good friends Fanny Veliz and Nelson Grande. Last year the team at Avenida Productions and our incredible cast raised just around $30,000 to produce it. It’s a passion project a year in the making and I’m incredibly honored and excited to be cast alongside some amazing actors I’ve met on my journey.

I love to keep busy and whether I’m in acting classes, seeing a play, learning a new language, bettering my voice through vocal coaching, exercising, or networking I am on myself to be better and think bigger every day and I’m so proud of that.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
What I like the least is obvious…the traffic and the parking, but you learn to deal. The thing I like best about our city is just that, it’s our city. We share this big beautiful all-inclusive wonder and I couldn’t be more proud of that. There’s a place for anyone and every one no matter what your tastes or interests are. There’s always something to do, some new place to explore, show to see, person to meet, adventure to be had, and you just have to be open to all the possibilities LA has to offer.
