Meet Sean Butler and Stephen Garcia of Solid City Coffee in Fullerton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sean Butler and Stephen Garcia.

Sean and Stephen, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Solid City Coffee was started with the dream that a coffee company could be about far more than just selling great coffee. In 2015, I (Stephen) met with Tommy Nixon, the Executive Director of Solidarity. During that meeting, he presented me with the opportunity to create a coffee company whose goal would not be just selling a quality product, but forming a company around the idea that a business can have a profound effect on the communities if it is built with intention. We wanted (and still do) Solid City to impact low income neighborhoods of Fullerton by creating the Workforce Development Program, designed to work with youth from at-risk environments, teaching them the skills necessary to navigate and thrive in the workplace. In addition, we wanted to use the money we made to support another branch of Solidarity, called Solid Brazil. Specifically, we help support Casa Liberdade, the first ever aftercare house for survivors of sex trafficking in São Paulo. That desire to use excellent coffee as a catalyst for community and personal transformation is what drives us still.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As in everything there has definitely been challenges. We began with no capital investment, from the ground up. This financial limitation has caused us to be creative as we pushed forward.

As a primarily online business, another challenge has been getting people to try our products. Our coffee is really good, but you can taste it through the internet. We really believe once people try our products they will want to keep drinking Solid City.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Solid City Coffee – what should we know?
Solid City Coffee is a social enterprise, specialty coffee company. We specialize in getting fresh roasted beans and cold brew delivered to your door. More importantly, we use coffee as a tool to impact youth from at risk neighborhoods through the Workforce Development Program, which we helped start in 2016. It is designed to help youth learn how to navigate and thrive in their chosen jobs and careers. We also use a portion of our profits to support survivors of sex trafficking in São Paulo, Brazil.

Our most unique feature is our Coldbrew Trike. We use this at various events, including weddings, corporate events, and private gatherings, bringing high quality cold brew and nitro cold brew to the world in a mobile setting!

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
We believe very strongly that our coffee can have a tangible real impact on the lives of the women in São Paulo and the youth in the neighborhoods we work in. Their lives are worth the sweat and blood we put into Solid City Coffee. We really believe that each cup of cold brew, every bag of beans brings us a new opportunity to make the world a place where everyone feels loved and like they have a chance to thrive in their life.
