Meet Scott O’Neil of Westside Fitness Training in Playa Vista

Today we’d like to introduce you to Scott O’Neil.

Scott, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
After leaving the United States Marine Corps in 2013, I moved to Los Angeles with absolutely nothing but the purpose of making another huge difference in my life. I was really only efficient at two things, being a leader, and staying fit. I wanted to lead individuals towards a fit lifestyle. I bussed tables in Marina del Rey until I had enough money to obtain my training certificate and that’s when it all began.

I immediately fell in love with Personal Training. It became not only a passion but a craving to meet new people and help them with their journey to a new healthy lifestyle. I grew to learn that I possessed different approaches to helping people than the corporate gyms expected from me. I quit working for gyms and went on my own to create “Westside Fitness Training.”

I wanted to cater to every individual and prove to people that being fit doesn’t require sales pitching, confusion, pain, short sessions or a journey alone with no rewarding finish line in sight. I forgot one major factor though when it came to personal training… A LOT of people have injuries, and rather than lying to people and fabricating my skills, I put WFT on hold.

I decided to go to school for Sports Rehabilitation, so I can focus on individuals with injuries and limitations. After earning my Bachelors degree in Sports Rehabilitation, I moved to Maui, Hawaii to obtain my Massage Therapy license. Both schools taught me SO many things that I proudly hold above most Personal Trainers.

When I finally felt I was ready to take on people that need help and attention the most, I moved back to Los Angeles. Since then, I have been working with a large number of clients, and I couldn’t be happier. I never thought my success would grow like this, and I have no desire to ever stop helping people.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I have definitely had my fair shares of ups and downs while building WFT. I was at the complete bottom for a long time while I am struggling on how to network myself and budget my finances with no work. I left corporate with no clients at all.

Just a vision, but visions don’t pay the bills. I knew I could have gotten my job back anywhere, but I knew that would have taken time away from my dream of WFT. I wanted to build a family of clients and utilize all my skills and teach everyone that my training is much different and much more efficient. It was extremely difficult.

Being inside and occupied with building WFT literally cost me all of my friends and every relationship I had, unfortunately, didn’t work out because my mind was always on work and not much else. Every idea I had just ended up failing when it came to moving forward to get my idea across and past my competitors. I spent years struggling just so I wouldn’t have to in the future.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Westside Fitness Training story. Tell us more about the business.
Pilates, Personal Training, Boxing, Sports, and Injury Rehabilitation. “Westside Fitness Training” specializes in SO many different things. What people don’t realize is that it only takes a day or two to obtain a nationally recognized training certificate, that’s it.

People invest so much money in trainers without knowing the fact most are not as educated as some other trainers. Years of school and many many different courses set myself and my team above most others.

What also sets us apart is that we DO NOT do the flashy workouts that may look “cool” on camera but nowhere near effective as professional, detailed training. We keep it safe and effective and fun. We design workouts that work! That is why we are so successful.

We chase the relationship before the money and truly consider each and every one of our clients family.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I believe luck has played a huge part in my life. I was in the right places at the right time for many parts of my life. From coming home safely from my two combat tours in Afghanistan to marrying my wife, to building “Westside Fitness Training.”

I am a very lucky individual and very grateful for everyone that has given me a chance to succeed. I am lucky to have such amazing clients that are so motivated and determined to get farther every single day.
