Meet Schalah Mitchell of Ma Chaise Design in Mid-city Los Angeles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Schalah Mitchell.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Schalah. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I am half French, as displayed in my personality and my very Parisian aesthetic. My other half is American all the way and after being adopted by the city of Los Angeles, I am now very much in love with the beach, blue skies, sunshine and palm trees of this magical city – a polar opposite of the Parisian city streets where I was raised, but nothing makes me happier than contrasts and contradictions.

Style and taste is subjective, this is never more apparent then when you travel the world. I am lucky to have experienced this first hand and every trip is an opportunity to be inspired; by the beauty of Rome, the bright colors of Shanghai, the sun setting on the Sydney Opera House or shining on the Mexico City rooftops and every carefully curated hotel lobby in which I have rolled my suitcase.

And then there is me, my own juxtaposition of Parisian elegance and California beach style! I believe in uniqueness and having fun with design.

Fabrics have always been my jam and flipping chairs my addiction! My happy place is a state of forever redecorating, and though moving my own furniture has been fun and great exercise, I have been known to raise eyebrows amongst my confused dinner guests. It was time to expand beyond these walls and pour all my ideas and contradicting esthetics into something real.

My business started the day a friend came over for brunch and left with two of my newly upholstered antique chairs. The seed was planted and a business born: antique chairs given new life with whimsical high-end fabrics from around the world.

Has it been a smooth road?
My first real challenge was to literally “Just Start”, in fact, that mantra still hangs on my bulletin board to this day. Starting something from scratch, with no experience, very little knowledge and lots of fancy ideas is always challenging, but it’s also very exciting and I was definitely looking for excitement!

I may be further along a year in and have come so far from where I started that today’s reality barely resembles the dream I started out with but every morning, I still have to say to myself “Just Start”!

It’s true even when writing this text… there is always going to be a first draft!

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Ma Chaise design – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Ma Chaise design offers a collection a chairs and stools hand made in downtown Los Angeles and upholstered with high-end fabrics selected from around the world: vintage Kanthas from India, whimsical animal prints from Japan, colorful stripes from the Basque region of France, glitter suede from Spain and oh so proper English florals.

Staying true to my roots, Ma Chaise design also continues to offer one of a kind vintage chairs that are lovingly restored and paired with complimenting yet often – unexpected designer fabrics.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Having lived in this city almost twenty years, all of it spent working in the film industry, I will give you my favorite version of Los Angeles in the form of a classic 90’s movie; Steve Martin’s “LA Stories”. A love letter to LA, full of blue skies, busy freeways, European expats and sunny dispositions… this is my LA!

I have worked on two studio lots, hiked all the popular canyon trails, walked my dog (illegally) on the warm beaches of Malibu, I’ve attended screenings at Hollywood Forever and concerts at the Hollywood bowl. And like everyone else in this city, I too, have spent hours stuck in traffic listening to KCRW and I have loved every minute of it.
