Meet Sathish Shankutty

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sathish Shankutty.

Sathish, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’m from southern part of colorful India, I began as a photographer framing and clicking everything I saw in streets near me as a hobby. I watch movies, a lot of them and fell in love with the stories in them from all over the world. Every movie I saw and every click on the streets made me restless and propelled me to find and do more. I wanted to learn about movies, how they are made and I wanted to learn from the best. I came to LA, pursued Cinematography program from New York Film Academy and built my network and reel. I kept networking and crewed on film sets every chance I got. I found mentors form Local 600 – International Cinematographers Guild (ICG) from film networking events. Currently, I’m working as a Lead Cinematographer in feature films, music videos, and commercials.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I had to walk on the same road where every ambitious person had to walked through. I faced financial challenges, insults, criticism, mistakes, mental & physical stress and etc.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I’m a Director of Photography/ Camera Operator, I tell the story visually in ways justifying the story and Director’s Vision. I do operate steadycam, Drones, most of the industry standard Cameras including Arri Alexa, Red Cameras, and etc. With knowledge from history of Cinemas & advanced technologies, I can choose appropriate equipment, lights, and methods to aid my visual storytelling without distracting audience. I love to do intense prep before going to production which gives my work uncompromising quality.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Seeing the premiere of the short film ‘Juba – The Untold Story’ which I worked as a lead Cinematographer made me proud because of the audiences positive reaction and response.
