Meet Sasha Colin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sasha Colin.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
A few years ago, I had dabbled in jewelry making, however I put it on the back burner for a bit because I had a vintage clothing business that was taking off. About a year ago, I started to create jewelry again in my free time and fairly soon that began to take precedence over the vintage creatively and financially. Now, I am creating statement jewelry from polymer clay and mixed metals.

Please tell us about your artwork.
I create statement pieces, mostly earrings. Like so many people, my art in many ways reflects my personality. Which if I were to sum up in one phrase would be (quirky/glam). I appreciate classic simple lines and shapes that are about nothing other than being flattering and beautiful. However, the esoteric part of me loves to satirize life through what I wear and make that an integral part of how I present myself to the world.

This is the esthetic I try to convey in my collections, Beauty with a healthy amount of levity.

What do you think is the biggest challenge facing artists today?
Feeling like they need to try to reinvent the wheel when it comes to creating. In my experience, I feel I’ve encountered that a lot. It’s a shame because (of course, baring blatant plagiarism) I feel we all draw inspiration from each other and from artists of the past as well. Trying not to acknowledge that seems like a tremendous waste of time and denial to me.

There is great art being made right now. However, if we are truly honest with ourselves, we know that very little is “truly and completely “unique” anymore.
