Meet Sarah Z of XO Bloom in Westlake Village

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Z.

Sarah, please share your story with us.
Well let’s start with a fun fact! I was born on Valentine’s Day, and I was the only baby girl on that day in the hospital. My mom tells the story of how the nurses were very excited to finally deliver a girl and they celebrated it by bringing me those big red balloons. It’s funny that I was born on the day we celebrate love, and as a florist, every day I get to be part of others’ celebrations!

Now let’s talk about how I got into my business. I started from an early age planning our family’s and community’s events. After graduating college, I went on to produce a couple of luxury bridal shows and became familiar with key people in the events industry. That’s how I met my future business partner; a Beverly Hills florist. We recognized that we complement each other and decided to partner up. I joined his business as a co-owner and COO, focusing on organizing, revamping and remodeling the business. I gravitated towards the flower design aspect as I was intrigued by those beautiful creations that the designers were making, and I started making my own designs. A couple years into the partnership, I envisioned a new kind of luxury floral boutique that would let customers design their own flower arrangements: a one stop location for all gifts and home décor items. I felt that there was an opportunity to bring our Beverly Hills flare to Westlake Village. My mom joined as a partner and the two of us scouted for locations. That new store was started as a separate business entity from our BH location. A few short months after we opened the store in 2015, my original partner decided he needed to focus on the original store, so we went our separate ways.

It worked out for the best, we rebranded as XO Bloom and officially became a “mother and daughter” business. Our brick and mortar is beautiful! 2400 sq.ft.  space with an upstairs event design loft and a downstairs retail area with a 24 ft. flower bar where we host floral arranging classes and parties.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Struggling is the growing pain of any successful business. Finding the right designers that can represent our brand, our quality and excellence in customer service is a continuous challenge, especially as we keep growing and we continue to need to add qualified designers. Also being a wife and a mom entrepreneur trying to balance family with business, it can get stressful sometimes. Luckily having the support of my mom and husband was instrumental in getting us through many tough times.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about XO Bloom – what should we know?
We at XO Bloom proudly offer a one of a kind location. Its interior truly changes with the seasons. It’s a flower shop primarily, but it’s also so much more. It has been called by customers as “more exquisite than anything I’ve seen in London and Paris”, and with our winter time decorations, a “winter wonderland”. This one lady walked in and requested to do her family portrait here! You really have to see it to experience it. Not only can we design the most stunning flowers for your events or home, but we also offer in-store classes and host parties where you can explore your creativity and create an art masterpiece. Our home decor items are unique accents that can transform any space. We also make one-of-a-kind wearable flowers that are sure to turn heads. A few clients get the full event production package. You want a reindeer for your Christmas party? How about a full stage built in your backyard with The Who performing? Done! We can accommodate your wildest ideas and create a full event that would have people talking for months.

We’ve been getting more recognition recently, and we’ve been featured on a few reality TV shows, including one with a famous Calabasas family. Just recently we won California Wedding Day’s 2018 Best Florist award for Ventura/Santa Barbara County.

We believe in being part of our community and in giving back. One of the privileges of being a florist is that I sometimes get to be see people’s faces when they receive flowers from their special someone. It is truly amazing how in an instant somebody’s mood can be transformed from dull and mundane to joyous and happy. This is why we make it a point to donate some of our beautiful creations to the local senior homes and hospices, and spread the joy.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
Aside from my mother/business partner who supported me all my life as a child and young adult and with my career, I would have to say my husband has been one of my biggest supporters.
