Meet Sarah Wilson of Third Base Co. in Sherman Oaks

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Wilson.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Sarah. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
As a nutritionist, I often get asked for recommendations for different health concerns, opinions on diets or what and when people should be eating. It wasn’t until a friend asked me what I would recommend as a healthy source of energy that got my wheels turning. He was looking for an alternative to coffee and popular energy drinks that are often loaded with sugar and artificial ingredients. As a music producer, he finds himself pulling all nighters in the studio grabbing the most convenient sources of caffeine around him to help him pull through. I’ve been drinking matcha daily for as long as I can remember, so it was a total no brainer to me that this is what I would recommend to him. I hit the kitchen first thing the next morning and whipped up a few different matcha concoctions, invited some friends over and did a taste testing to find just the right blend.

It was soon after that, I was hired to cater my first song camp with Third Base, fueling writers and producers from all over North America. Shortly after that, I brought on my business partner Bridgette, we launched our online store and the rest is history!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Let’s be real here, smooth roads are boring. All the bumps we’ve hit along the way (while frustrating at the time) have been great learning opportunities. They’ve given us the chance to learn more about our business and the industry. One bump, in particular, forced us to change our entire business plan.

We’d always set out to have our business run as eCommerce only, selling Third Base by the 6 pack through our online store. When we launched, sales were pretty good, however, they started to drastically slow down within the following months. We were getting many questions from our consumers about if they could order singles, or where they could find them to purchase from a store within their city. As we directed them to our website we found they were not as eager to commit to a purchase of a whole 6 pack without trying it first. We had retailers reach out to us previously, however, we turned them down, as selling wholesale was not in our plan. With online sales declining we had to make a change, so we opened up to the wholesale market, selling to local retailers. This meant we had to find a way to drastically lower the cost of the product in order to make a profit and we had to do it fast. A lot of time, effort and negotiating went into getting our cost to a place we were happy with. By the end of it all, I couldn’t help but think, why didn’t we do this in the first place!

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
There are many things I would probably have changed, but then again, all the stuff that’s gone wrong has made us better and allowed us to learn more about our business. I’m happy we launched when we did, we got ourselves out there without using excuses to delay our debut. I do wish we would’ve found a way to lower our overall start-up costs, taking the time to source out better prices for our packaging and ingredients. We found ourselves settling for prices before looking too far for a better price. Taking the time to do that would have taken a lot of weight off our shoulders cost wise and allowed us to spread our money a lot further.
