Meet Sarah Ro and Jay Chris Moore of MOB HQ in San Fernando

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Ro and Jay Chris Moore.

Sarah and Jay Chris, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Our story began in 2013 when Jay created The MOB Dance Company (formerly known as The Academy of Swag). Since then, many faces have come and gone, but the foundation of what the company stands for has never changed.

Years later – just three days into 2019, we found out the studio we called rehearsed at and called home was set to be demolished. We decided it was time to plant our roots by opening our own studio- a place where we can set new goals and create more opportunities for our dancers to succeed. The capstone to that chapter of our journey.

On March 5th, 2019, we signed a lease on a 4,500 square foot space in San Fernando. After hundreds of hours of labor and the help of our friends and supporters, we opened the doors of our studio, MOB HQ.

In less than a year, we have proudly created a home not only for our team, but for all artists and creatives. We pride ourselves on being a space where people from all walks of life can feel welcomed and supported. We offer dance classes for beginners to advanced dancers, as well as a space for all types of creative projects.

Our floors have been graced by dancers for Justin Bieber, Da Baby and Daddy Yankee, and artists such as DaniLeigh and Tank.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
We have faced so many challenges that have been equally rewarding and harsh. We learned very quickly that owning a business comes with the frustrating loop of solving one set of problems and another set immediately following. We have had to step into roles we knew nothing about and just figure it out along the way. It can be really scary! When we decided to open the studio, we had nowhere near the capital necessary to take on such a huge project, but with the help of our friends, family, and supporters, we worked with what we had and made it happen. There were so many times that we had no idea how we would come up with the money to make a necessary purchase or pay a bill- but blessings would somehow come through at the last minute every time.

We learned the importance of staying level-headed, patient, motivated and focused through difficult times. Along the way, we have had many small wins that kept us going. Through all of the obstacles, opening this studio has by far been the biggest blessing and achievement for both of us and we truly can’t imagine our lives without it.

MOB HQ – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
MOB HQ is a creative space for dancers and artists to use their talents! We offer all kinds of services such as studio rentals, dance classes for beginners to advanced dancers, and choreography for weddings, Quinceañera, and parties. Our 4.500 square foot studio is equipped with a 2,750 square foot sprung dance floor and is the perfect environment for all types of creative projects. We are best known for our affordable rates and welcoming atmosphere.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Jay Chris: I define success by being happy, and knowing that the people in my life are happy. You can have all the money in the world and still be unhappy. I choose to base my level of success on the life achievements of myself and the people close to me.

Sarah: For me, success is about making a difference in other people’s lives. Moving with integrity. Knowing that I helped create a culture that people thrive in, being able to provide positive experiences and opportunities to the people around me…that is my ultimate success story.
