Meet Sarah Reynolds of Sarah Reynolds Voice Studio in Highland Park

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Reynolds.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Sarah. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My earliest memory related to singing is simultaneously wanting to do it and fearing that I was no good at it. Since then I’ve lived and learned some comforting truths. First, singing is a fluid skill; it can be learned and when nurtured, evolve. Also, the level of satisfaction you experience with your singing is directly proportionate to how curious you are about it and how this curiosity drives the integrity of your work. Understanding these fundamentals has allowed me to thrive as a teacher. My journey has included two coasts, two degrees, brief experiments in 9-5 admin and middle school music education, and a post-graduate school hiatus followed by a post-improv comedy return to singing. I’m grateful to have built a busy career freelancing as a classical singer and voice teacher. These two sides of my career inform and balance each other. The more I teach, the more I understand about my own singing and vice versa. It’s exciting.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Any creative career is complex, but the more familiar you become with the highs and lows, the easier they are to ride out. Bottom line, present-day me is better at coping than 20-year-old me. I’ll offer that the fastest way through my struggles has been a result of recognizing my own agency.

Sarah Reynolds Voice Studio – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I teach out of my home studio in Highland Park and serve clients from all parts of LA. I specialize in personalized vocal lessons crafted for singers, actors, speakers, and hobbyists. My background is in classical music and opera and my techniques and sensibilities apply across musical genres. All ages and experience levels are welcome and I have a knack for working with beginners. I am a highly skilled vocal technician equally focused on empowering my students with language and tools that inform their practice and performance outside of the studio. I’ve been praised for creating a comfortable and fun learning environment. I take great pride in this compliment knowing first-hand how deeply personal (and vulnerable) the pursuit of singing is.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success is growth. Rigor. Resilience when it’s hard and humility when it’s easy. Holding boundaries. It’s a trap to think success is a destination because it’s been the journey this whole time. At least, that’s my 2018-resolution-fueled view of success. In the past I’ve certainly been guilty of chasing pinnacles, finish lines, and golden geese. This method is seductive, but I don’t recommend it. Whether it’s in my own career or in my voice studio, I always encourage the singer to choose hope and possibility over fear and cynicism.
