Meet Sarah Keith of Sarah Keith Photography in Los Angeles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Keith.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I fell in love with photography when I took my first Black and White film development class in high school. After that I almost always had a camera in my hand and I knew I wanted to become a photographer. My parents on the other hand didn’t think this was a good career choice even though they were proud of my talent. So I became a nurse instead. While in school I became pregnant at the age of 19 and again at 22. I divorced when my children were very young and raised them on my own. My life went on but my passion for photography never waned, nor did my desire to be a photographer professionally, but with raising two children on my own I never thought it was feasible to quit my job and start a photography business or even start one on the side- let’s face it, photography is expensive! Cameras, lenses, lighting… it all costs a pretty penny.

Fast forward to January 16, 2010, my mom died unexpectedly of pneumonia. She had just turned 61. It was a heartbreaking and devastating loss for my family. But the one positive thing to come from it was that it really opened our eyes to the fact that life really can just be taken away from you at any moment and you should not take it for granted.  I contemplated more than ever how I could get a business going. It was all I could think about. I didn’t want to live life with regrets. A few years later, on October 11, 2015, my dad also died suddenly and unexpectedly of a cardiac embolism – a blood clot to his heart. I can’t describe what it feels like to have both of your parents taken in this manner. It puts a whole new perspective on life and what you value. This time I knew I had to find a way to pursue my passion.

In death, my Dad brought life to my photography business. I feel it was his last gift to me. With the little bit of money he left me, I was able to buy all of the things I needed to start my business. I started it last year and I am thrilled at the progress I am making. I love being a nurse but I have never felt so fulfilled as when I am photographing clients and editing their photos. The positive feedback and referrals from clients overwhelms me with pride and joy. And I know my parents are proud of me, too.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
My business is fairly new, so I am still learning and adjusting as I go. I am constantly doing research and talking to other photographers and getting business tips wherever I can. I didn’t wake up one day knowing how to run a business, so that in itself is a challenge, but I thankfully photographers in general are a very nice group of people who want to see each other succeed and are more than willing to give loads of helpful information.

Sarah Keith Photography – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am a portrait and wedding photographer. I photograph families, couples/engagement sessions, maternity, newborns, children, teens, elderly, boudoir, and pets (I love animals and they seem to love me, too). I prefer to shoot in natural light because I think it is the most beautiful. I believe I have an ability to use light in interesting ways and that is one thing that my clients are attracted to.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I believe success is being fulfilled and I feel I have achieved that. I have two wonderful children that I have managed to raise on my own. They are both in college and on their way to bright futures. I have a growing photography business that I feel excited about every day and which fills me with a sense of pride and accomplishment. I feel successful. 🙂
