Meet Sara Phillips

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sara Phillips.

Sara, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’ve always loved music and singing but never thought I was very good at it. Without telling anyone I knew, I started uploading videos of me singing to YouTube. And the feedback I received was amazing! It really helped build my confidence and think that I could maybe continue doing it. After graduating college in my hometown of Montreal, Canada, I decided to move to New York City to pursue music. While in New York I played any and every gig I could get- starting with the tiniest, smelliest dive bars you could imagine. During this time, I also started writing and producing my own music on my own. I wrote and produced my first EP (self-titled), and continued to perform whenever I could. I started booking college tours for myself and ended up playing in universities and colleges all over the States, which was such an incredible experience. During my time in New York, I met some very talented producers from Los Angeles and eventually moved to LA in 2015. I still perform all over and have released another album and a number of singles. I have lots of new music coming out this year that I’m very excited about!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely not! An obvious one was financial. It’s incredibly difficult to make a living as an independent artist, so that was very difficult and stressful at times! It was also a bit tough for me to be away from my family and friends back home! But I have such supportive a family and such incredible friends and I visit home as often as I can, so I’m lucky!

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I can’t think of one specific memory, but my family and I would drive to Maine every summer and spend a couple of weeks there, and to this day it’s one of my favorite places and holds some of my best memories with my family.
