Meet Santa Monica Photographer: Kevin Flint

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevin Flint.

Kevin, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started in high school with a camera given to me by my mother. Up till then, high school was very difficult for me. I was a geeky kid. Amongst other things I had glasses on my face, braces on my teeth, and a back brace on my body. This made me a social outsider. But with a camera in my hands, I found things to be different. The camera enabled me hide behind it, to mask all my fears and social anxiety. Instead of being an object of prejudice and ridicule, I found that I was excepted and even invited to join in on activities. With the social lubricant of the camera, a hidden talent was awakened. It was the talent to see past the front people were putting up, to look past the mask, and to see the real person hidden beneath. I began to look for more and more ways to help others overcome themselves, and to see in a photo the inner beauty I know to be there.

Has it been a smooth road?
My road has been far from smooth. Being a child of divorced parents, causing me to drop out of college. That led me to sign up and serve 4 years in the Marine Corps. Overcoming alcohol addiction. Having to contend with career and financial troubles, that got so bad that I was unsure of how I was going to pay rent, or even when I was going to eat next. And yet, all of my struggles have taught me. I now have a greater understanding, and empathy for people and the hard times most have to go through. It has vastly increased my capacity for compassion, as well as my tolerance and understanding people’s different life experience. I also believe that it makes me more open to other points of view, and gives me the ability to share more fully their journey.

What are your plans for the future?
There is an old saying, “If you want to make God laugh, make plans.” Having stated that. After attending my brother’s wedding in the San Juan Island, I have gotten a taste for destination weddings. The idea of going to unusual and exotic places is very exciting.

Let’s go backward a bit – can you tell us about the most trying time in your career?
The hardest time, by far, was after I decided to get sober. I had to admit to myself that the cause of all the trouble, pain, and suffering in my life, was a direct result of my thinking and actions. Then began the process of facing my faults, and overcoming my inner demons. Only with the help of strangers, who became my friends did I dig myself out of the hole I had created. In others, I rediscovered the connections with people and my inner self. I found the magic of being of service to other people.
