Today we’d like to introduce you to Sandra Avanthi Lazar.
Sandra, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was born in Sri Lanka, adopted at five weeks old by Swedish parents, and raised in Sweden.
As a child, I was quite adventurous and loved playing sports, especially soccer. Being part of a soccer team taught me the basics of life – hard work, discipline, and dedication.
I’ve always had an entrepreneurial spirit. Even at a young age, I’d sell anything I could get my hands on! Whether it was peddling lottery tickets or popcorn bags, mowing neighbors’ lawns, or recycling bottles for 20 cents per bottle, I loved the feeling of having my own money that I earned myself.
Being raised in a small town, I often fantasized about living in a big city. Once I got my eyes on Los Angeles – I knew that’s where I wanted to live. As a teenager, I worked three different jobs to save up money for college.
At 18 years old, I packed my bags and left friends and family behind to start a new adventure in the City of Angels.
Los Angeles was everything I had dreamt of and more. I was blown away by the people I met, with their open-minded perspective and fearless attitudes. Each day was like a new adventure with a new opportunity to go after your dreams.
I earned my Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management and shortly after college, I landed a job as an Assistant Account Executive for one of the nation’s leading business management firms. I quickly learned the fundamentals of cash flow management & planning, as well as how to optimize my time to handle demanding requests by our high-end clientele.
Driven by a desire to create something of my own, I started taking digital marketing classes online. My motto in life is “knowledge is good, application is better, transformation is best”, hence, I try to apply anything I learn. After obtaining a Certificate in Digital Marketing by Cornell University, I felt the need to apply my knowledge into something good. During this time, I became increasingly more aware of climate change and started educating myself about what was going on with our environment.
It is shocking to me that scientific facts regarding global warming are right in front of us, yet many people are choosing not to believe it.
As I learned more about the effects of unhealthy and unsustainable products, I did a complete overhaul of all the brands in my house. Thanks to non-profits like Environmental Working Group, I realized that just because something is approved by the government, doesn’t always mean that it’s safe to use, so I replaced all of my products with eco-friendly versions.
Combining my passion for starting a business on my own, with my dedication of being a positive force to help combat climate change, I founded EVO Marketing Strategies with a mission to inspire, encourage and promote eco-friendly brands and sustainable practices around the world.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Absolutely not! Starting a business is tough. I knew it was going to be, but it has definitely been more challenging than I ever imagined. One of the biggest challenges I had to face was building up a team with talented people for the right price. Also, staying ahead of industry changes is constant.

Brand awareness via social media has never been as important as it is today. To stay relevant, you need a clear social media strategy to target your ideal customers including generations like Millennials and Generation Z, who spend most of their time on their phones. These same young people are also at the forefront of making real positive change in the world, like climate activist Greta Thunberg (whose mom is actually from Sandviken, Sweden, the same town I grew up in!).
