Meet San Gabriel Photographer: Selina Gonzalez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Selina Gonzalez.

Selina, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started taking pictures when I was 10 years old when my dad handed me his Canon AE-1. I couldn’t stop since then. I took pictures of family, school events, even joined the yearbook in high school. I started taking classes in photography, being the designated photographer at family events. I started turning my attention towards models and lifestyles, and that’s where my focus has been the most recent years. I enjoy every second of creating images that I’ve made in my head into reality. Collaborating with people is an amazing inspiration as well.

Has it been a smooth road?
There will always be up and downs. The downs would probably only be not having a subject or event. I went a while without touching my camera, life was stressed, so busy until I just grabbed it and left for the day. I’ve always had support from my family and friends.

What were you like growing up?
I am an ambivert. I look back on my personality growing up and I see that develop. I was very adventurous, curious and a big risk taker. I was also very private, hesitant and calm. I grew up with four brothers and an older sister, so my interests were very wide when I was younger. One day I would be outside playing with skateboards and attempt to blow things up, and the next day I would be inside painting and playing with dolls. I grew up playing sports and taking my school serious. I didn’t forget to have fun though.

What is your favorite childhood memory?
We had gone to a family party that was pretty far from home, and we didn’t know our extended family that well at the time. So my brothers and I went to go explore the neighborhood. I had a camera and we spent the whole day taking funny pictures, exploring school yards and talking about life. I look back on this day and relive those memories, and am thankful I had a camera to capture the good day we had.

What are your plans for the future?
Going with the flow is what I am known for at times. I do embrace the future and am excited about it. As far as any big changes, not so much, yet. I do look forward to growing up. I know I will not allow myself to become a sell out adult, so I can look forward to a life of happiness where I do feel and act young.
