Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelly Torres.
Kelly, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I got started in makeup at a very young age! I was self-taught from around 13 and continued to pursue to learn new skills as art was a huge passion of mine! I had terrible skin as a teenager (surprise, surprise) so learning how to cover my skin issues with makeup was almost an art form.
I eventually would go on to attend Makeup Designory in Burbank, CA. Makeup Designory is a certified school for professional makeup artistry. There I would specialize in Multimedia makeup which includes beauty and special effects makeup artistry. I graduated from MUD in October of 2015 and have continued to work as a freelance makeup artist ever since!
Has it been a smooth road?
Being in a freelance business is always a hard road to be on at times! There’s lots of ups and downs when being a freelance artist. Some months will be super busy and I’m constantly busy. Other months, I have one booking in that entire month. Plus this industry is filled with so many talented people! There are so many other artists especially in this area that there is lots of healthy competition to go around! You constantly have to be evolving your skills creatively as an artist as well as business wise as a freelance worker.
What has been the proudest moment of your career so far?
The moment I am most proud of in my career is when I created an age makeup on a young male and turned him into a very aged elderly man fresh out of a retirement home. He walked around town for a while and even my fellow professionals had thought he was actually an old man. It was nice to know that even though I always put out my best possible work, other professionals can appreciate and see the craftsmanship involved. To be able to create art that makes people believe its real is a very rewarding feeling.
Tell us more about the struggles you’ve faced along the way.
The hours on set can definitely be grueling. 12 hours on and 12 hours off can be a fun yet difficult schedule! Balancing a work life and a personal life can be a struggle with unpredictable hours and sometimes even squeezing in time to sleep and eat can feel like a major challenge! Caffeine becomes not only a lifesaver but a crucial part of your existence
Is there something we can do as a city to improve the outlook for professionals like you?
Los Angeles is a fantastic place to get a career started in the makeup industry. Not only are there so many talented individuals to learn from, but there’s plenty of competition to always keep you striving for your best. The amount of job opportunities out here are very good considering how many industries out in LA require makeup artists. You’ve got to work hard and always be on your game but you are guaranteed to learn so much and meet some amazing artists in this industry. I can’t imagine a better place to work!
