Today we’d like to introduce you to Samuel Wang.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I had been in fashion for about 5 years when this idea popped into my head. I was starting to get tired of the fast nature of fashion. I wanted products that lasted a long time and not bound by trends and fads. I wanted a timeless design that didn’t break the bank. I started looking into what I needed in life and found that leather goods was a common denominator among many things that were major parts of my life. That’s how The Goods was incepted. I am not a designer but I really love and appreciate good design and that really has helped us develop the look and feel of The Goods.
Has it been a smooth road?
It hasn’t been smooth getting here. We were met with a lot of obstacles getting past the initial stages. Many manufacturers did not want to work with a new and small brand and the ones who were willing generally did not produce a product up to our standards. The really was the main driver getting us to start producing our products on our own. We are really glad that we did.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
The Goods is the culmination of what I personally want and need. We set out to design and craft leather goods, home goods, and consumer electronic products that are distinctive in every detail. Our team is made up of engineers, designers, and craftsmen and we are dedicated to providing customers with everyday essentials that are functional and minimal.
We currently are still mainly focused on leather goods but have slowly moved into home goods and electronics, with some collaborations in the works for furniture. We started with 4 products and now have 30 products, so we can definitely say we have grown since the beginning. Most of the products are made in-house at our own workshop located in Arcadia, CA.
We are most proud of that we were able to make most of the items in LA because I think that’s important to us to be a part of the community.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I love LA so much for what The Goods is doing. Everything is in town. Whether you are looking for leather, hardware or machinery, you can find someone local that can help you out. There are also this made in LA movement that’s bringing a lot of people together. I have met so many fellow founders that is setting up their base in LA.
