Meet Samantha Colicchio of Sparrow Feng Shui in Los Angeles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Samantha Colicchio.

Samantha, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
As a little girl, I loved rearranging the furniture in my room. Every time my parents would come in to say goodnight, or to check on me, my desk would be in a different place, or a chair would be moved, or all my paintings would be on different walls! I was a funny little kid. But something about it felt great. It felt exhilarating to experiment with moving the energy around, and I noticed that it made a big difference. I took that desire to “get it just right” to my dorm rooms at NYU, to apartments in New York City, to my little flat in Florence, when I lived there, to all my apartments in Los Angeles.

One day, when I had been living in LA for a few years, I found a Feng Shui book at Barnes and Noble and read almost the whole thing in one sitting. I told a friend about it, and she asked me to come and work on her office. I applied what I had learned in the book and rearranged her office furniture and decor. That month, her sales tripled! That, coupled with my genuine enthusiasm for applying these ancient principles, encouraged me to start a business. I studied at the American Feng Shui Institute, got certified, and started taking clients!

A friend of mine worked at a very popular yoga studio in Hollywood, so I got introduced to the team there. They asked me to teach a Feng Shui workshop. So a lot of my clients have come from the yoga community, which is appropriate. Yoga is like inner Feng Shui.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Honestly, the biggest struggle has been overcoming my own doubts about myself as a business owner. Everyone around me seems to believe in me wholeheartedly, but there’s always that nagging voice, that ego, that makes its opinions known. On the outside, things have fallen into place magically. I was set up with the perfect community of people, I got to work with some incredible clients, I found the perfect place to study, and have been offered some thrilling opportunities. So there’s that inner struggle, but also an acceptance and gratitude for the way things have worked out. I feel lucky to have had such a smooth road.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Sparrow Feng Shui – what should we know?
I specialize in Flying Star Feng Shui, one of the oldest forms of Feng Shui. It takes the client’s birth date, home or office direction, and the current year into account–making it one of the most individualized forms of Feng Shui. I hone in on the elements needed in the home or office and on the client’s best directions. I am able to identify problem areas, increase functionality of a room, create sacred spaces for meditation and prayer, help craft inspiring office spaces, and make the bedroom a relaxing and sensual environment through the practice of these ancient principles. I work to maximize my clients’ prosperity, health, wealth and personal growth.

My process is this: I come into a home or office and, using the tools I’ve learned, I create a chart which tells me which are the positive and negative directions in a space, and which elements (fire, earth, water, metal and wood) are needed in which parts of that space. I visually identify Feng Shui faux pas and address them, creating a healthier flow of chi, or life force energy. I think I am most proud of the moments in a session when a client’s eyes light up– when they become excited about building their altar, or creating a new office space, or moving their bed in a different direction. I know I’ve done my job well when a client is trying to kick me out of their house so they can go shopping or get to work on their new project!

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I think what has helped me most in my work is a deep belief that what shows up on peoples’ outsides is a reflection of their insides. It’s become easier and easier to sense a client’s inner state after a walk-through of their space. If a client’s home is full of items from an estranged parent, for example, I get to (gently) suggest that those items be replaced. Excessive clutter lets me know that there may be a “scarcity mentality” at work there. Working with peoples’ spaces can be tricky, because they can sometimes be reluctant to let go of things that aren’t serving them. Kindness also comes into play here. If I walk into a room with sparse walls and no furniture, I can help the client explore WHY they haven’t yet invested in their space. So I would say my ability to interpret and address Feng Shui issues is my most helpful quality.
