Meet Samantha Chagollan of Purple Ink Creative in Orange County

Today we’d like to introduce you to Samantha Chagollan.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Samantha. So, let’s start at the beginning, and we can move on from there.
I grew up in Southern California, as a kid who loved to read as many books as I could get my hands on. I come from a family of storytellers, so telling and writing my own stories always came naturally to me. I studied literature in college, but when I graduated, I made my way into the corporate world, first in book publishing and later in financial services.

As a marketing communications manager for a large financial institution, I began telling stories in a different way–through branding and promotional content. I left my corporate job in 2015, and after some time off, I started Purple Ink Creative and became a marketing consultant and writer.

Most of the time, I help small businesses and entrepreneurs tell their own brand stories through digital and traditional channels. I still have a passion for books too, so when I’m not being a marketer, I’m probably working on another book for kids.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
One of the hardest decisions I’ve ever had to make was to leave my corporate job. To walk away from a steady, good job to go it on your own–it goes against everything we’re taught! Especially if, like me, you don’t have a plan in place for what happens next.

But I knew that I wasn’t happy where I was, and I could sort of envision where the path I was on was leading.

I didn’t want to spend another ten years, at that organization or somewhere else, feeling burned out and creatively capped.

So in retrospect, I think it was the right choice–really, the only choice–I could have made that made sense for me. More than three years later, as Purple Ink Creative is thriving, I can say it’s been the best decision I’ve made.

Purple Ink Creative – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
With Purple Ink Creative, I get to put the experience I garnered in the corporate world to work for small businesses. That’s so rewarding for me because my family owned a small business for more than 30 years, and I understand how hard it can be to do everything yourself. When you own a small business, you have to be an owner, accountant, a manager, AND a marketer. Who has time for that?!

I love helping small businesses and creative entrepreneurs with gaining clarity on their brand because branding is so much more than just your logo. Since storytelling is my superpower, much of my work is centered on writing, either crafting promotional copy or creating content for web and social use. I also have a handful of corporate clients in various industries that I help with writing and editorial work, as well as marketing strategy and corporate communications.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I think success is being able to do work you love for a living. I believe that when you put your heart and soul into what you do and truly believe in the work you are doing, clients appreciate that quality and dedication and reward you with repeat business and referrals.
