Meet Samantha Berman of The Yoga Witch

Today we’d like to introduce you to Samantha Berman.

Samantha, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I have always felt a calling to pursue holistic, alternative practices. Ever since I was a kid, I have been drawn to alternative practices and medicines. There have been many different starting points for me, as I do offer a variety of different practices.

The practices I offer range from tarot reading, to yoga, to reiki healing, to massage therapy, to embodied mindfulness coaching. I purchased my first tarot deck just about ten years ago when I was 14. It is the same one I use to read for myself and for other people today! About four years later, I took my first yoga class, and I knew I had to become a yoga teacher. I felt so good after waking up from shivasana that I knew I wanted to help other people to feel that good. About a year after that, in 2016, is when I did my yoga teacher training. Part of my training was to offer 15 free classes. I offered most of those classes at a local occult shop, which soon became like a second home to me. I then started to offer tarot readings two days a week out of the shop. Over that time is when I started training as a reiki practitioner. It took me three years of practice before I became a holy fire reiki master in December of 2018. Over that time is also when I began my study and practice of meditation, and in September 2019 is when I completed my year long training to become an embodied mindfulness coach and teacher. I also decided to deepen my understanding of the body and pursue massage therapy. I began my 500-hour course in February of 2018, and have been officially certified since April of 2019. I am very grateful for everything that led me to where I am now, and I am excited to see the ways I can start to blend all these different practices together!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It most certainly has not been a smooth road! I don’t think smooth roads exist (at least not consistently), especially not for people who choose to follow their heart’s true calling. The first and most obvious of the struggles I have experienced involves worrying about money. It is not easy as a new, young freelance holistic practitioner to make consistent money, which is honestly part of the reason why I chose to pursue massage therapy. It has been nice to have consistent income thanks to my job at a spa, and although it was not my first choice for myself, and it is still corporate, ultimately it is fulfilling (for my heart and wallet) and I love it.

One of the greatest struggles I have faced as an alternative practitioner and business witch (as I like to call myself) is the doubt that people have in my practices. People don’t believe in reiki, which is a form of energy healing. They think tarot is a form of “devil worship.” But ultimately, what helps me is knowing that those people are not my people to begin with. It is not my job to try and convince people that the alternative practices I love are “real,” and, after a few attempts at trying, I have no interest in doing so any longer. Although it is difficult because I have come up against this struggle in my own family, hearing from my grandmother (bless her sweet heart) that she is “worried about me” because she knows I read cards and wear pentacle pendants. Again, it helps me to know that it is not my job and not in my best interest to try and change anyone’s mind.

Another struggle I have faced is not being taken seriously as a young femme and new practitioner, or facing people who seek to take advantage of me because they see my novice, or because they see my giving and compassionate nature as weakness or naiveté. This is still a struggle I have issues with, but over the years I have become a lot better at setting boundaries, and knowing that I do not have to accept every client who comes my way.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about The Yoga Witch – what should we know?
Well, as I mentioned before, I am a jack of many trades! I offer tarot readings, yoga classes, reiki energy healing, mindfulness meditation coaching and classes, and massage therapy. I would say people probably know me most for…. well… I am not sure. I guess it depends on who you might ask! I am happy to be known for many different things, and I am very proud of the impact I have on the people I work with. I am also proud of the way that I have grown as a person through pursuing my heart’s calling as a holistic practitioner. I’d say what sets me apart from others is the variety of practices I offer, and the different ways I blend them together. For example, often with my tarot readings, my interpretations fall back to mindfulness. In my reiki circles, I may pull a tarot or oracle card to help set the tone. I am also a certified YomassageTM therapist, which blends restorative yoga postures with massage therapy. This massage modality is amazingly helpful in making massage more accessible to people who otherwise may not be able to afford a private massage session, or who may be uncomfortable with the idea of undressing to their underwear (or their birthday suit) and letting someone touch them for an hour. My goal is to make all the practices I offer accessible to everyone.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I feel that being honest and having integrity is most important to my success. If I am not practicing meditation or yoga myself, then how can I truly be a good meditation or yoga teacher? If I am not working to expand my understanding of the tarot (which I believe is truly limitless in its wisdom), then how can I offer the best, most helpful readings to my clients? Most of what I offer focuses on helping people through their own inner work, and if I am not working on myself, then I am not fit to guide people in such a way.
