Today we’d like to introduce you to Sam Milgrom.
Hi Sam, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My story begins in my hometown of Detroit – where I embraced my passion for music at age four with my first record player. Age seven guitar lessons. Age 16 as lead singer/rhythm guitarist in a Rock Band. I worked at record stores and at 26 opened a record shop of my own – Sam’s Jams which grew to be one of the country’s highest volume emporiums. At 38, I purchased a run down old movie theatre and converted it into a multi-arts venue showcasing live music, cult films, and rotating art displays. It still thrives as my legacy to the city. I moved to LA in 1996 and, in 1998, opened Mr. Musichead, LA’s first gallery devoted to music. We showcase the world’s largest collection of music-related photography, original artworks by legendary musicians, plus concert poster art.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Haha…smooth road…about as smooth as the typical pavement in LA! Though I have grown my business from a 200 sq ft storefront on a side street off Melrose into a 5,000 sq ft gallery/event space, the challenges we face are typical for any entrepreneur. Finding quality employees who will stay. Prohibitive marketing/advertising costs. Getting your business noticed among all of the competition and noise. Surviving two recessions, a pandemic.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
As the gatekeeper of the music’s historical images, I feel a particular responsibility to acquire, collect, curate, nurture and promote. The world of music has been my calling. Having a gallery devoted to Music in a space that allows people to view, engage, learn about, and purchase a personally significant piece of art or photograph is an extremely gratifying lifework. In addition to housing one of the world’s largest collections of music photography and showcasing well-known images, we also have access to deep archives which allows me to bring to light many rare and never before seen images. Representing Musicians who are also Visual Artists gives us the opportunity to share new works and another side of their talent with their fans.
We have hosted dozens of World Premiere Art and Photography Exhibitions and celebrity book signings.
Over the course of the last few years, we’ve also become known as a prime event space for LIVE intimate music concerts, showcasing renowned and emerging talents in Jazz, Indie Rock, Pop, Poetry, & Hip Hop.
What I am most proud of is the impact my gallery has had on clients and visitors who come away with a memorable and unique experience.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
All of the amazing musicians whose work serves as a constant source of inspiration and motivation.
All of the amazing people who have worked with me in my various business experiments and enterprises over the years. It’s all about teamwork when it comes to reaching goals.
The special friends and associates who have helped fund expansions and turn ideas into reality.
