Meet Sally Chun and Soyoung Seo of The Selected

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sally Chun and Soyoung Seo.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Sally and Soyoung. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
We are Sally and Soyoung, sisters and founders of The Selected. Our shop began with our young, perennial love for vintage apparel. We began thrifting and selling clothes online at the age of 13. We used this knowledge and passion to brand a company that would repurpose pre-worn clothing into a more timeless and modern wardrobe.

In practical terms, Sally comes from a background in Communication, taking on most of the written and brand marketing aspects of running the shop. Soyoung leads in creative direction, graphic design, and photography. We are either side of the same coin, functioning best when working together.

Has it been a smooth road?
“Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can.” – Arthur Ashe

Our greatest hurdle was the start. In 2017, the year of our launch, we were both working full-time jobs, and running an online shop was merely a dream of the future. Lots of schedule changes had to be made, and we compromised our weekends and nights to first get the shop running. However, once we decided to do it, we were in it for the long haul.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into The Selected story. Tell us more about the business.
The Selected is a globally curated vintage and designer online shop featuring mindful clothing and accessories. We present a mixed collection of classic vintage, as well as new pieces from noteworthy, independent brands. We challenge the stigma that comes with the term ‘vintage’ and provides a modern view of timeless, upcycled clothing. Thus, inventory is chosen with care and a heightened awareness of fashion forecasts, including past and current trends.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Over the past few years, we’ve seen ‘sustainability and ethics’ in fashion take the world by storm. We believe that the most sustainable clothing is the one you already own, which makes vintage so special and essential. We also see ethics being a foundational part of textile and clothing production, meaning the brands that we bring on board must adhere to a level of ethical production.
