Meet Saige Mateo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Saige Mateo.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Saige. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
A grew up in the lower Eastside LaGuardia project housing. When I finally turned 18, I had left on my own to Colorado to start college photography. After four years, I finally graduated but continued to want to stay in Colorado for the views and the people, and after that I really began to put my energy into my photography business and into my artwork for showing. From then on, I spent all my time building and creating work and creating relationships with new people I met along the way and it’s worked out for the best. I travel back-and-forth from Colorado to California for an Art, work, and for fun! I live in my van and I built out a trailer so I can travel and live as minimal as possible. I don’t seek a rich life, but to have a peaceful life is my goal all these experiences that I’ve had now are way more than I could’ve imagined myself having when I was living in New York. A lot of people don’t like to leave outside their comfort zone, but when you see things you don’t like every day, the best part is to up and leave and try a new lifestyle. And I’m happy where I am right now. I still want to grow, but am proud of how far I’ve gotten on my own.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
There are a lot of struggles along the way. I did not have much money or anything when I came to Colorado and no car, which was the hardest part. I started biking 16 miles to get to my restaurant job from college so I can start making money and eventually bought my first car. Also, college had triggered some depression issues more so than I already had, which made it very very difficult to work or function. It was very difficult also to adapt to a cultural change from New York to the mountains, being in New York I was able to experience all different types of people and was very more open than a lot of people I have met in Colorado, Pushing through that was difficult but doable and although it’s not smooth sailing yet, I am doing my very best to get exactly where I want to be or more.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
My main business is my photography company, I mostly do weddings and portraiture and I’m known for that with clients, as for my artwork I am known for that mostly from friends in the Colorado Aspen area, and San Diego area. I like to keep my art at different places in different states!

What were you like growing up?
I was a lot more, I don’t know how you would say it… a New Yorker? There was no filter back then but I’ve always had a want for art and always saw things visually and detailed. That’s why I enjoy traveling to California because people are very similar than New York they more open to excepting all different types of people.
