Meet Sage Nelson of S.A.G.E. Personal Training in North Hollywood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sage Nelson.

Sage, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My name is Sage Nelson, I am 19 years old, and I am originally from a town in the Mojave Desert called California City. I currently live in Santa Clarita, just 20 miles from North Hollywood. I began dancing at the age of three in my hometown. I was put in a beginner tap class, and my love for dance grew from there. Unfortunately, my dance studio relocated out of state at age eight, so my mom and I began to commute over 120 miles round-trip multiple days a week to continue my training for the next seven years.

In 2017, my junior year of high school, I was invited to a Broadway school in New York City and was given a full scholarship for the two year program. I decided to decline the scholarship because I knew I was meant to stay in L.A.

Fall of 2018, I moved to Pomona to study Nutritional Science at Cal Poly Pomona. After a year of college, I knew it wasn’t for me. I decided to still go to the health field and start my training and nutritional coaching business, S.A.G.E. Personal Training. This business is very new for me, and I am excited to see the growth in it.

As for the dancing side of my career, I am currently apart of IMMAbreathe Co. and immaBEAST Co. run by Willdabeast Adams, Janelle Ginestra-Adams, MaryAnn Chavez, and Monika Felice Smith. I am also branching out into working more behind the scenes and being more a part of the creative process. I also hope to one day start my own tap company in L.A. since it is my favorite and best style.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t been the easiest. During my time in high school, I had people who didn’t believe or see a purpose in my craft and thought it was annoying that I loved to dance so much. These people were supposed to be my friends, but luckily I now have some amazing friends at the dance that are genuinely there for me as I am for them.

This past year has probably been the toughest year ever. I started to get really bad social anxiety and anxiety in general. I would get to the point where I wouldn’t get out of bed, I would cry more than I ever have before, and I thought about quitting dance for good. Being in L.A. and trying to start up a career in dance can take a toll on someone mentally and physically. I am happy to say I am at a better point in my life just by opening up more to my friends and parents.

Please tell us about your business.
As stated previously my business is called S.A.G.E. Personal Training. S.A.G.E. stands for Strength, Agility, Gains, Excellence. I am certified through the International Sports Science Association, specializing in personal training and nutrition coaching. With it being so new, it hasn’t expanded that far yet. I plan on training at private gyms until I can open up my own private gym and nutrition clinic in the North Hollywood/Burbank area. My other goal with S.A.G.E. Personal Training is to travel with celebrities while they are on tour.

I am just proud that I even had the guts to start something like this. I’ve been seriously injured a few times, but now that I’m more knowledgeable when it comes to training my body, I feel that I need to help others like me. I want to help dancers, athletes, and even just someone that is looking to drop a few pounds. My passion is definitely something that sets me apart from others.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite childhood memory would have to be going to the lake during the summer with my best friend’s family. They would bring their boat and water tube that hooked to the back of the boat. We would put on our lifejackets and hop onto the tube for a ride around the lake. Sometimes they would try to knock us off the tube by going really fast and turning a lot.
