Meet Ryan Ward and Salina Kyle of Little Shop of Gore

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ryan Ward and Salina Kyle.

Ryan and Salina, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
We met at Son of Monsterpalooza in 2014 and have been inseparable since. Ryan is originally from upstate New York, Salina is from Los Angeles CA where we both currently reside/work. We each started our own Etsy shops in 2015 while we both had full-time jobs; we would work a full day and then come home and make art together in our tiny studio apartment. We quickly realized that we work better together, so we decided to merge our shops into Little Shop of Gore.

We eventually upgraded to a 1 bedroom, then a 2 and just recently moved again into a 3 bedroom which is currently where we run our entire operation out of. One of the biggest reasons that we started Little Shop of Gore was to make things it seemed no one else was creating at the time, things we would’ve wanted to own ourselves. After our initial success, Salina quit her day job in 2016 to run LSOG and be an artist full time. In addition to running our shop, Ryan is also a Professional Makeup FX Artist.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I wouldn’t say a smooth road, there’s definitely been a handful of bumps along the way. We’ve been very fortunate and have had a lot of success with what we do. Our biggest struggle has always been time and space, trying to keep up as the company grows. It’s especially difficult when its only two people running everything themselves.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Little Shop of Gore is the brainchild of two artists in love with their craft and each other.

Salina Kyle is LSOG’s Creative Director and graphic designer. She is a self-taught painter, sculptor and is the concept artist for most of our shop’s creations.

Ryan Ward is a professionally trained special effects makeup artist. His vast knowledge and expert skills are essential to the shop as he handles most product development as well as lead on all FX/Makeup work.

We specialize in creepy collectibles, devilish decor and more ghoulish goodies!

We make things that you cannot find anywhere else, with a huge attention to detail, especially in our handmade works. With a wide range of inspiration that we pull from, our work encompasses a much larger audience than just horror.

What were you like growing up?
Ryan was into horror and makeup fx from an early age, and that love only grew more intense throughout the years. Always the kid who brought horror movies to the party, and embraced the term weird. Not surprising he fell into the punk scene and finally felt at home, and while his musical tastes vary he’ll always be a punk at heart.

Salina was a loner, a rebel. Fascinated by the strange and unusual, and obviously everything Burton. She was restricted from watching most horror movies, so she grew up on a steady diet of 80’s movies and pop culture. You could almost always find her in her room reading or be writing poetry, alone… utterly alone.
