Today we’d like to introduce you to Ryan Martz.
Hi Ryan, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Surfboard building is a family business. My father started Watermans Guild in 1983. I started out as an airbrusher and eventually moved into laminating before taking over the business several years ago.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road has been anything but smooth. I’ve been in this business through recessions and clark foam closing… I had to learn how to run a business and manage employees without any training and provide for the people who depend on me for a paycheck.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am known for airbrushing surfboards and for color laminating surfboards. My attention to detail and high standards are what sets me and Watermans Guild apart.
I am most proud of taking the business that my father built and building on it to create my own line of surfboards called “THE GUILD” SURFBOARDS.
How do you think about luck?
I am extremely fortunate to be a part of the business that my father built. He was known for having extremely high standards and I am lucky to take on that reputation. However, with that reputation comes very large shoes to fill.
