Today we’d like to introduce you to Ryan and Davina DeCant.
As an artist, husband, father and special needs teacher, Ryan DeCant has found a way to evolve his workspace into an environment where he and people with special needs can take his designs and print his work in a grassroots style. Doing this while employing a small staff of only special needs people, more specifically, people with autism. All of Ryan’s designs are hand drawn and painted, they are not graphic art or computer designs. The drawings and paintings are transferred to silk screens, custom placed and sized for a variety of apparel from t-shirts, sweatshirts, and hats. Once they are ready on the different sized screens, they are printed by him and his special needs apprentices.
Has it been a smooth road?
Industry Horror has had more than it’s fair share of struggles… Ryan gave up his teaching career to start a non profit where he volunteers all of his time to train, and teach young adults on the spectrum how to silk screen.. our flagship store was ruined in the Thomas fire just 2 days after opening where it then took IH 6 months to rebuild all of the damages inside along with reprinting over 900 t-shirts, hats, and all the retail apparel.. Ryan also had a major back surgery where his back was broken where he had to regain and rebuild himself to be able to keep our special staff employed.. he has a fighting spirit, he won’t stop until he can provide jobs to multiple young adults and adults on the spectrum to become self-supporting citizens of society.. Davina herself has sacrificed so much to be able to fulfill her husband’s dream and goal. Every day is a struggle for us but the smiles on our employee’s faces and confidence we have given to these super special individuals is priceless!
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Industry Horror Inc. – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Ryan DeCant is an artist, husband, father and special needs teacher who has evolved his workspace into an empowering tool. We do not see limits in the abilities of people with special needs; instead, we like to open the minds of everyone working with them, including their own families to the potential they have of creating a productive world from within.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
What we like most in our city is the amazing community, the art, the fact there is so many opportunities for businesses, non profits to grow and get recognized.. our least favorite part is how many there are on the spectrum that do not have jobs.. we simply want to motivate other businesses to hire these individuals and take a little extra time to train and help them as we have.. granite we are a small business with huge hearts!
