Today we’d like to introduce you to Ryan Berman.
Ryan, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I am the founder of Courageous: a consultancy that builds and leads Courage Brands™. I’ve been fortunate to develop meaningful stories for major brands in every corner of the country including Caesars Entertainment, Hilton, Major League Baseball, New Era, PUMA, Subway, and UNICEF. I truly believe that courage is any business, being or brands ultimate competitive advantage. Many people want to be courageous; they just don’t know how.
In 2015, while running my last company i.d.e.a., I started working on a book about courage. 3 years later, it gave me the courage to fire myself and move onto my ‘what’s next’. The soon-to-be-released book ‘Return on Courage’ presents a Courage training methodology which I used to launch my own Courage Brand: Sock Problems.
Sock Problems is a charitable sock company that’s out to “sock” different problems in the world with cause-centered socks. We’re helping people express how they feel about pressing problems that matter to them.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Always hardships. For us, it was locking in all of our Charity Navigator-approved charities. We give 25% of every purchase back to our partners and each sock has a leading cause partner associated with it. Imagine trying to articulate your idea to some of the world’s largest charities when you have no tangible product to share and no website to showcase. Somehow, these charities believed in our mission, our team and our values. It didn’t hurt that the comps of our designs resonated.
Sock Problems – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Sock Problems is out to ‘sock’ problems in the world with cause-centered socks. If you aspire to sock inequality, sock breast cancer, sock hate or sock climate change, we most likely have a sock for you. We hope passionate people will have the courage to take a stand while standing in our socks.
What I’m most proud of with this company is what also sets us apart: we give targeted cash back to our select charity partners on every purchase. 25% of every sale goes to one of our charity partners who are the true experts in ‘socking’ problems.
We want people to know exactly where their money goes. Many companies who have their ‘buy one, donate one’ commentary don’t share the details. With Sock Problems, you get to decide where your dollars go every time.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Writing my soon-to-be-released book called Return on Courage. The companies that win are courageous. The ones who aren’t get passed — or worse, die. The problem is most companies have the wrong idea as to what courage is (and isn’t). The learnings in this workshop spotlight the differences between calculated courage vs careless courage. The companies that train and learn the differences are earning their ‘Return on Courage’ Why I’m so proud is I can actually help stuck companies get unstuck. Never thought I’d be “that guy” with a method — but here I am with a way to help willing businesses and brands liberate forward.
