Meet Rusty Thornhill

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rusty Thornhill.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
When I was younger I used to be obsessed with cartoons and I would draw them all the time. As I grew older I developed an affinity for realism, in particular portraits. The first portrait I ever did was in 4th grade. I continued hone my abilities through high school and by the end of high school I was able to draw portraits that looked pretty similar to the subject. It was then that I decided tattooing was a career that I wanted to be a part of. I wouldn’t realize that dream until 7 years and one contract of military service later though. During those 7 years I continued to work and grow as an artist. By the time I got out, I was able to draw at a much higher level and my portraits were amazing. I had no problem landing an apprenticeship at Hollywood Stars Tattoo where I now work.

Please tell us about your art.
I love realism but I also love fantasy. My art often times features people, as they are my favorite subject. I draw, paint, and tattoo. Art is my passion and I love what I do. I get inspired by people and their stories as well as myths and legends. When people look at my art I hope they realize that it’s full of meaning and that they leave with a sense of wonder. My artwork will always have meaning and every piece carries a story with it.

As an artist, how do you define success and what quality or characteristic do you feel is essential to success as an artist?
Success is being proud of the work you produce and being able to create freely without any boundaries. Quality that is essential to success as an artist is the drive to constantly better yourself. Without that, you will never be successful.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
You can see my work in person at Hollywood Stars Tattoo. I am also looking to be in galleries around Los Angeles in 2019. You can support me by sharing my work or coming in and purchasing pieces for yourself.
