Meet Roz Brooks of Vegas Roots in Las Vegas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Roz Brooks.

Roz, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I was a teacher for seven years and felt like it was time to leave the classroom and do something else. Little did I know that God would lead me to farming. But I accepted the call and it’s been an amazing journey.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I would say the road has been fairly smooth. I had never planted a seed prior to being donated the 5 acres of barren land which I turned into a food source, but I kept at it and now it feeds over 2,000 people a year.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Vegas Roots – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
Our nonprofit called Together We Can is a 501c3 business model. I’m pretty much known around my community as a health guru. Not only do I teach others to grow their own, I also have a brand called WELL Women of Color. Through that, we’ve created an online wellness program called Wellness University. WellnessU is basically Weight Watchers dipped in chocolate. 🙂 We teach WOC how to overcome basic lifestyle diseases through eating and living a healthier lifestyle. This is something I’m really proud of because it’s going to truly change the trajectory of health in the minority community.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
My plans for the future is to continue growing the garden and making an impact in the surrounding communities by continuing to provide nutrition education, organic fruits and veggies, community outreach with our mobile farmers market The Veggie Buck Truck, and to be successful with the four months diabetes trial study, I’ll be starting in October. Aetna Healthcare is funding it and I’ll work with 100 women who are diabetics, tracking the results of their efforts.

  • The membership program through Well women of color is $14/mo
  • To rent a plot at Vegas Roots is $350 for 12 months
  • To become a garden member to help sustain us is $10/mo
