Meet Roya Adjory of Natulique California in Topanga Canyon

Today we’d like to introduce you to Roya Adjory.

Roya, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My mother, sister, and I have been serving our community in Encino for the last 30 years providing Hair Care services via our salon. In 2005, as we were becoming increasingly sensitive to the chemicals in hair products so after much investigation, I created LA’s first certified “green” hair salon, using natural based products in an environmentally friendly space which earned our salon a Climate leader Award from Cool California. First and still the only salon to have received this prestigious award. In our global quest to find the healthiest and the best performing hair colors and products, I discovered a company in Denmark called Natulique which after few short months of using their brand at our Green salon, I decided to make the line available to other hair salons by becoming their California distributor. I had also begun to lobby in Sacramento along with grassroots organization in an effort to change the cosmetic industry for the better. The laws pertaining to hair salon products are over 70 years old. Being a distributor for this exquisite line allowed me access to hair salons and with that, I am able to communicate the pressing issues of legislative changes that desperately needed happen to protect the stylists from harmful chemicals they come in contact with daily.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The beauty industry is very resistant to change, and unfortunately, the chemicals used are not regulated by the FDA or any other government agency. I have been on the cutting edge, leading the movement for healthier choices for salon workers and their clients. When I built our “green” hair salon, there was no guide or template to follow. Who had ever even heard of denim jean insulation or countertops made from recycled paper pressed into stone? When it comes to hair colors, people tend to like to use what they know works; however, more of us are becoming educated and aware of healthier alternatives like Natulique.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Natulique California – what should we know?
The companies that make natural-based hair colors are all over the world: Australia, England, Germany, USA, Spain, Italy, and Denmark. Although many use less chemicals plus natural ingredients, Natulique from Denmark outperforms the rest, especially in terms of gray coverage. In addition, Natulique has set a new standard for holistic beauty. This includes no animal cruelty or testing of any kind, fair wages/no slave labor, renewable energy (wind), recycled packaging materials, and vegan hair care products made with organic ingredients. As a stylist and salon owner, I am able to provide superb customer support and business guidance to my clients. I am super proud of representing a line that aligns with my values. Our distribution company is located in California so our clients receive their products supper fast once the order is placed.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I sincerely care deeply about people and the well being of our planet. In my role, I’m on a mission to provide folks with an opportunity to make choices that promote health and beauty when it comes to their hair. In a word – integrity – that I can be counted on to provide the highest quality products and the expertise to support their proper use.
