Meet Roy Gelbart of Extreme Green Screen in San Fernando Valley

Today we’d like to introduce you to Roy Gelbart.

Roy, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Before I begin, let me tell you a bit about my past. Ever since I was about ten years old, I have been fascinated by Green Screen photography, chroma key technology, and the entire “Photoshop” editing and warping of images. I recall being in elementary school when I’d often go to my local crafts store and purchase four green posters, tape them together, and build myself a green backdrop.

As a hobby, I used my homemade screen in order to create fun YouTube videos. It was during my sophomore year of high school when I attended a Bar Mitzvah party with my family.

The Bar Mitzvah’s hosts had booked a Green Screen open air booth to provide Green Screen photos for the guests. The photo booth company did a decent job, but their attitude and professionalism weren’t up to par (considering the high price tag the event’s hosts paid for their services).

During that evening, I decided to take a personal photo at the Green Screen area. After hanging out around the photographer and editor working at the Green Screen station, I suddenly realized that with my skills and knowledge, I can start my own green screen business.

At this point, I was on a mission to figure out and understand the necessary elements in order to build a successful business that I would be proud of.

After a month of research, I had the core idea figured out. I purchased the minimum amount of equipment necessary to start working, mastered the core fundamentals, and then began marketing.

After a couple months of intense marketing and networking, I finally booked my first event.

Ever since then, the business has a domino effect. Customer satisfaction at each event results in continued interest of our services and additional event bookings.
The next three months were full of events scheduled and completed. As a result, I was finally able to pay my parents back their money that I originally borrowed.

Three years later. So much has been learned and accomplished. I became an independent entrepreneur and more knowledgeable of the business world.

Has it been a smooth road?
It wasn’t all smooth. I definitely ran into a few issues along the way. However, thanks to my friends’ and family’s incredible support, I quickly overcame these issues.

The first issue was my age; I was only 16 years old. I was considered too young by law to start a business. Therefore, I had to earn my parents’ trust for them to be accountable for the business. Unfortunately, I was not as experienced as my competitors. I felt that the public was hesitant to hire me for their events.

The second issue was a financial one. At that time, I was unemployed and fully dependent on my parents for all my personal expenses. In order to start the business, I needed a loan.

Extreme Green Screen specializes in open air photography for any type of event! We specialize in Bar/Bat Mitzvahs, but our services are suitable for any type of event. In the past, we have serviced holiday parties, corporate events, school events, fundraisers, quinceañeras, birthday parties, and baby showers.

We are known for our extreme attention to detail and professionalism. During each event, we do our best in order to blend in and create the best experience for our clients’ guests. We make sure that our station is always organized. As a special courtesy service, we even customize backgrounds in order to match the theme of each event.

As a company, I am most proud of the extreme customers’ satisfaction from the services that I have provided. I personally put in the extra effort to meet with my clients and ensure them that they will get the best service out there. At the end of each event, I am truly humbled and appreciative of my client’s ecstatic reactions of the positive outcome of their events.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Los Angeles is home to many people. Although it has it’s ups and downs I would never dream of living anywhere else. With endless opportunities, I am blessed to live and work in a city where the people love to get together, party, and enjoy themselves.

Thanks to LA’s great weather, people are continuously shopping and enjoying outdoor activities. Nearby attractions like Venice Beach’s boardwalk clearly highlight the American lifestyle of shop, eat, and play.

What I like least about Los Angeles is the heavy traffic in many times throughout any day. Too much time has been wasted in my car!
