Today we’d like to introduce you to Rowan Metzner.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I knew I wanted to be a photographer, Rhode Island School of Design taught me how to be an artist. Concept was completely foreign to me when I walked through those doors. Today it is everything.
During my senior year on exchange in Rome I had the privilege to travel to Paris. On display at the Rodin Museum were his erotic works. I was captivated. Those images have danced in the back of my mind ever since. Over the past year and half working on my book, Erotic Masters, I have put them to use. I spent that time photographing an exploration of the difference between erotic art and pornography. Using works of Rodin, Schiele, and Picasso I posit the following questions: What exactly is the difference between erotic art and pornography? Is it possible for medium to play a vital role?
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Struggle and I seem to be best friends or maybe frenemies is more appropriate.
I got appendicitis a week before an important photoshoot. The model was coming in from New York so it was not like we could easily change it. I am a very hands on photographer. Normally on set I do everything. Not being allowed to lift anything was so difficult for me. I hired an additional assistant, who was wonderful, and we made it work out beautifully. It was a tough day though.
On my very last day of shooting for my book Erotic Masters, I had a model cancel an hour before her call time. What?!!! Who does that? Not anyone I will ever book again, that is for sure. Anyway I had two choices. One: panic and cancel the whole shoot, losing the money I had paid for location, the second model, hair and makeup. Or two: panic for a second, then take a breath and regroup. Problem solving time. I hit up every single model resource available determined to find a replacement. My anxiety, anger and frustration grew by the minute but within an hour I found someone excited to come save the day. In the end it only pushed the shoot back about 30 minutes and she was probably better than the original model I had booked.
I could go on and on. My point is this: you can either let a bump in road stop you. “It’s a sign I shouldn’t do X” or acknowledge it as a challenge and conquer it.
Rowan Metzner Photography – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I photograph high end portraiture that is tailored to each client. My specialty is the human figure: be it nudes or athletes in motion, my work highlights the unique beauty of the individual.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I am extremely proud of my new book, Erotic Masters. I spent the past year and a half bringing it to life and I finally get to share it with the world. Erotic Masters is a collection of photographic representations of erotic works by Rodin, Schiele and Picasso. Each scene is photographed as if the original artists had done so themselves, inviting the viewer to contemplate the difference between erotic art and pornography and if medium might play a vital role. We all know the infamous quote by United States Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart regarding porn: “I know it when I see it.” But do the rest of us? Is it really so cut and dry? Are there defining factors?
