Meet Rose Scobie of Sign and Sing Baby in San Gabriel Valley

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rose Scobie.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I have a passion for baby sign after taking a baby sign class for the majority of my son’s first year of life in London. I grew up in Monterey Park and recently moved back after a fourteen-year hiatus. Upon return, I noticed that there weren’t any baby sign classes in San Gabriel Valley so I decided to create my own!

Baby sign greatly enriched my relationship with my son, as we were able to communicate via baby sign for eight months before he started being able to communicate with me through speech. At his peak, James used over sixty signs. When he first began to speak, he continued to sign for emphasis. James is now two and a half years old and still loves to sing the songs we learned in our baby sign class.

I hope to spread my love of baby sign to the San Gabriel Valley and enable local parents and guardians to better communicate with their babies.

Has it been a smooth road?
Teaching baby sign and bringing local parents and guardians together has been a blast. The struggle has been to reach out to more families in the area to let them know that our class exists! We would like to have different classes targeted to various age ranges, but at the moment there haven’t been enough students.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Sign and Sing Baby is a 45 minute class for 0-3-year-olds which combines music, bubbles, scarves, toys and puppets to teach guardians and their babies baby sign language. We teach baby sign through original and familiar songs. Each week we focus specific theme such as farm animals, transportation, and food so that at the end of an eight-week session parents have a solid foundation which enables them to sign with their children daily.

I am most proud of being able to bring local parents together in an environment where they can make new friends and feel comfortable sharing their parenting experiences. Our class is great because of its small size (no more than 13 students!). Each week our students look forward to seeing their friends and Manny the monster.

Aside from our unique class format and our small class size, what really sets us apart is the price. We only charge $89 for an 8-week session which is significantly cheaper than other child music and baby sign language classes in Los Angeles.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Monterey Park is a great place for a business like mine. It’s very centrally located for many parents. We just need to figure out a way to let more parents know we are out here! It has been great working with the City of Monterey Park because they provide a great facility, the Barnes Park Service Club, and advertising in their local newspaper, Cascades.

  • $89 for an 8-week session
  • First class of the session is FREE to try out before you sign up
