Meet Rosanne MacDonald of HypnoVitality in Thousand Oaks

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rosanne MacDonald.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I began my journey to become a Certified Hypnotherapist in 1999 after working for over 20 years as a legal secretary and law office manager of law firms.

I came home from work one day, looked my husband in the eyes, and said, “I can’t do this anymore!” He immediately said, “Why don’t you become a therapist? People always come to you with their problems and concerns, and you are always caring and compassionate in helping them with their challenges.” I said, “Oh, you’re right! I guess that does come naturally to me!” The next morning I made a phone call to my local college and set up an appointment for that night after work. When the admissions administrator said it would take me 8 years of education, then 2 years of internship, etc., and I would still need to keep my day job; I was discouraged. A few months later, my husband was listening to the radio and heard an ad that said: “Are you the type of person who people are drawn to with their problems and concerns? Are you compassionate, caring, and love helping people; and do you not have eight years to become an MFT?” My husband immediately called me, I called the hypnotherapy college, made an appointment for that night after work, and the rest is history!

I absolutely love what I do! I love when my clients leave my office with hope, positive mental tools, and a smile on their faces!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
While I was going through my internship at the hypnotherapy college, I began letting all of my friends know that I would be starting my practice soon. I was so excited! Then, I received a call from one of my closest friends, and she said, “Will you do a hypnosis show for our son’s Bar Mitzvah?” I said, “No! I will never do anything like that, but I can give you the name of someone else that may!” “My hypnotherapy practice will be for helping people with their challenges in a pleasant environment and for clinical reasons.” That was my first challenge.–I needed to educate people on the holistic health benefits of hypnotherapy, and get them away from thinking hypnosis is for those stage shows they have seen.

My second challenge was realizing that I would no longer have a regular monthly income with benefits! It’s all up to me! I began marketing in the Yellow Pages, which was popular then. I had brochures and business cards made and sent out letters to all of my friends.

After my internship at the college, I looked for a quiet, comfortable, professional office space. I first sub-leased from an acupuncturist and had my own therapy room; then she retired, and I needed to find a new space. It took a while, but I am now in a beautiful professional building for the last 12+ years, and absolutely love it!

We’d love to hear more about your business.

When my clients call, email or text me with deep gratitude and appreciation, it brings me happy tears and deep fulfillment.

What were you like growing up?
When I was growing up, I was always very friendly. I had a lot of very close friends, and we are still close to this day! I was raised in a very traditional Italian family with my grandparents living next door in Los Angeles. I was raised to respect my elders and to always be polite, kind and generous. We had dogs and cats, and I loved playing with and caring for them.

I enjoyed listening to music while I would do my chores. I liked helping my dad paint the house and refinish furniture. I went to private school from first through twelfth grade. I was ambitious and started my first paid job as a receptionist at my church rectory after graduating from elementary school.

When I was 18, I loved being a volunteer “Usherette” at the Greek Theater, which was just up the street from my home. I got to see all of the concerts for free, and even went backstage after the concerts to meet the musicians! It was a blast!
