Meet Rosalba Mann of Paleteria La Michoacana in Modesto

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rosalba Mann.

Rosalba, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My love for ice cream started a hot summer when I was ten, I started making paletas out of my mom’s kitchen with ingredients she had around. I loved sharing them with my friends, especially because ice cream was such a special treat that we would get from paleterias on weekends after church, so having them readily available for my friends on any given day made me popular kid in town.

When I immigrated to the United States from Mexico, I entered the ice cream industry and my passion for ice cream only grew stronger as I was inspired to bring that authentic paleteria experience with traditional flavors and ingredients to all the other Hispanic immigrants like me. Now, I’m the Research & Development Manager at Paleteria La Michoacana, you could say I have the same job I did when I was ten, creating paletas out of wholesome ingredients to share with those that matter the most.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t been a smooth road though, the business started out of a pushcart, and later it grew into a small business that quickly flourished to what it is today.

Although our products are found at thousands of retail locations it’s been hard to communicate to the general public (non-Hispanic) the differences between the common frozen ice pop and our paletas. We use fruit chunks and purees, along with real ice cream and/or other inclusions for an unforgettable experience they’ll want to share with their loved ones.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Paleteria La Michoacana – what should we know?
We strive to be the authentic #PaleteriaExperience at home or on-the-go. What does this mean? The paleteria experience is sharing the tradition of exploring flavors with those that matter the most. We make continuous strives to do this by innovating new flavors and formats for paletas, bolis, and frozen fruit cups that are available in thousands of retail locations across the country. Los Angeles being a large market where if you were to walk into your local tiendita, carniceria (meat market), panaderia (bakery), etc. you’re bound to find a bright pink La Michoacana bunker (freezer) with our frozen treats.

A paleta is not just a frozen pop, we’re so much more than that. Our paletas have inclusions like fruit chunks and churro pieces. For example, for our Arroz con Leche, we actually first make Arroz con Leche from scratch using an in-house recipe that includes rice and raisins, then we pour this into paleta molds. That’s why you can literally bite into rice and raisins when enjoying the paleta and it’s sooo good!

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Creativeness and high regard to quality standards, staying true and authentic to our cultura with flavors and formats.
